Child W/ Special needs told he can no longer wear Varsity letter from Wichita Ks HS

Student with Special Needs Asked to Remove Varsity Letter, Per School Policy | Bleacher Report

Teachers had issue with him wearing the letter since 'he dosnt play varsity level sports' I think they could have handled this quite differently... There is no disability, only different ability... *sigh*

In basket ball crazy to the point of stupid, Kansas, it doesn't surprise me that one of these tight ass mother ****ers would complain.

Rather poor taste displayed by the school officials. You would think the school would be proud that this child was wearing the varsity letter.

Wonderful, yet again our schools putting us in the public distaste spotlight again... They have a tradition with looking like asses to uphold and are doing a good job of it....

Fricken morons......

Here is my opinion from another person with Autism Spectrum Disorder: rules apply to everyone, even those who are special. We deserve no special treatment, as we have no right and will not be given to us. I am most likely have to change majors because the University refuses to work with my condition, so that's how I learned that they don't give special treatment. We are just another brick in the wall.

I was in special education until Middle School, and we were expected to follow the rules just like the rest. So, being special means nothing.

In High School, I wanted to wear a hat because I have light sensitivity due to having Autism Spectrum Disorder. However, I was told no hats were allowed. So, I didn't wear a hat again.

What is the issue people are complaining about? Is he a varsity athlete or not? If you have earned a spot on a high school varsity team you have earned a Varsity Letter to wear on your school jacket. If you are not then buying a Varsity letter is against the rules. Is this complex or complicated? Why would people think it okay to treat him differently than any other student trying to do this? What is the school doing wrong in asking him to remove the letter?

Im actually in complete agreement with you.

What does the students special needs status have to do with whether or not he is on a varsity team and eligible to wear a lettered jacket?

Hes not on the team, therefore no. End of story.

Other schools in the wichita area give varsity letters to those who play on the special needs team. The principle is a real *******.

I will agree the principle doesnt seem to bright, easy solution for this. Kid already has a lettered varsity jacket, make him a member of the team in some capacity. Done.

Probably did the kid a favor, don't want to get a jacket than peak in HS and end up a loser in a bar 20 years later wearing it!

So? What does that have to do with this schools rules? Do the other schools break their own rules or do they have a different rule which states the qualifications for wearing a Varsity letter includes those which are not on a Varsity team?
