I have a friend who may or may not be in some difficulty and I know her phone is on because I just received a text but she won't call me. Anybody who has her cell phone could have sent that text, which said very little, and gave me no clue that it was actually her. Long story, what a drama, and I feel like a bit of an idiot not having the first clue how to do GPS tracking at this late date. I did a search but I am uncertain about how to proceed.

What would make you think you could use GPS to track her if you haven't taken some actions previously to enable doing so? Someone like the police may be able to but a private citizen has no access to location data if the phone in question isn't pre-configured to allow that. Otherwise crazy stalkers would be stalking people using such a method all the time.

Yeah, without the phone owners permission...it *shouldnt* be easy to just hunt down someones phone via the phones GPS. There are apps that do this, but they often require some kinda of prior set-up...

Unless...its an apple device ?. Apple has a 'find my iphone' software service, that might be able to help you. I think you need to log into an apple web page with the apple ID (and password) of the phone, and even then the phone has to be on, have a cell signal, have the GPS on and receiving a signal to get a precise location. I think that this service can also make the phone beep/light up (even if its set to vibrate) so you can find it under a pile of clothes...

Here is where spdrun rolls into the thread and blasts apple. It'd be funny if we hadn't heard it before.

I'm going to assume that LEO have some tools, and my android phone has manufacture 'find my phone'-like functionality forced upon me. If I was a legit owner maybe the local store/vendor could help.

If the real world is anything like the NCIS TV show, they can get a location in about 15 seconds. Probably have to go the "missing person" route and the police would not be highly motivated to help I suspect.

find my phone works with iCloud. You'd need to be able to log in to her iCloud page and proceed from there. It's find MY phone, not find SOMEBODY ELSE'S phone.

Their are tracking apps but you need to set them up ahead of time. My weird friend is still using one to spy on his ex girlfriend.

I was actually pretty sure this is the way things are. Does seem like a real intrusion into privacy if you could track most anyone just because you had their number and their phone was on.

She finally got in touch. I will likely be keeping some distance from this lady. Women tend to be enigmatic but this one is a bit much. Attractive and witty but too much into manipulation. She had been under some duress from a persistent previous boyfriend so it's not all contrived drama. But going into 'radio blackout' mode shortly after crying about what a stalking creep he is was not nice.
