Well I did it. Just went and picked up a '79 300D. Some will say I paid too much, but I think I got a heckuva deal.
Even with 262,000 miles, the body is clean, interior is excellent. But the biggest selling point for me is a new factory rebuilt engine. Everything under the hood is new except the starter and a year old radiator. All new motor mounts and shocks, all new hoses, new exhaust, new air conditioning compressor, etc. With the new tires and brakes, this car rides terrific. And with a 4 year /48,000 mile MB factory warranty on the engine, what else can I ask for? Gosh I feel like a little kid with a new toy! The original owner kept a spreadsheet of all repairs and maint expenses. Cost for the first 21 years through May, 2000, prior to new radiator and engine was 8151.34 for maint and 10601.94 for repairs. Breaks down to annual costs of 388.16 and 504.85 respectively. --Craig |
