This is not going to end well.
I can't see how this is going to work. If the slab is separating here why do they think it won't separate at the next level since they will be drilling deeper holes in the underlying structure and fracturing it? Instead of 500,000 ponds they could be looking at 1mil+. I'd like to see THAT splash!
Seems to me it'd make more sense to blast the loose one free and let it drop. Sandstone is pretty brittle stuff from my experience. Any of you geologists feel free to chime in. https://grasswire.com/story/62/glen-canyon-dam

The structure of the underlying sedimentary layers might be vastly different. I didn't look very hard at the situation but ... A better solution might be to chip away at the lower edge in small bits and have a controlled removal.

Something odd about that story. If they had to close the boat ramp at Lee's Ferry, it's not close to Glen Canyon Dam as it is quite a few miles upstream from there. I also don't remember a canyon wall close enough to that boat ramp to cause problems.

It's not the boat ramp. It's where the river-runners embark for white water raft trips.
