Ahh yes, the old "Moto Guzzi Smoothie". They were THE choice for serious touring back in the '70's and '80's. Haven't seen one in quite a while.

Their main fault was the same which limited the Ducati and BMW motorcycles. Lack of any type of local parts replacements. A buddy of mine had to hole up in some piss-spot town in Washington waiting on a part for over a week. He never lost his love for the bike though. Never sold it. Ended up willing it to his grandson.

Long life bikes indeed. I have a friend now living in Florida (I know, I know) who bought one new in 1971. Still riding it. When he thought he was too old, he fitted a sidecar and is still riding it. Italian cop bikes still.

Which model are you interested in?

You can score some good deals on new ones, if you shop around.

The V7 is nothing special, and rides pretty poorly. I would stay away from those. Everything else in the lineup is heavier than conpetitors too....

I nearly bought a Guzzi back about 1974 but could not get the loan. I later bought a BMW, paying cash from my first independent Architectural job I moonlighted.

The Guzzi was better quality and design than anything I had seen before but I felt the BMW was considerably better quality.

The BMW felt like a two wheeled Mercedes in its build quality and handling.

I test rode a new V7 a few months ago. It was light and nimble, and made a good noise, but not very powerful.

Some of the Police Departments in the late 1960s thru the 1970s used the Touring model as a replacement for the Harley Davidsons they had been using. I think also the California Highway Patrol used some of them.

I my Motor Cycle Engineering Book I beleve it said the Bores were hardchromed (can't remember if the Cylinders were Aluminum or not). The means if you wore the cylinder out you had to have it rechromed and bored.

After that facing the 1970s fast super bikes many departments switched to Kawasakies and the Moto Guzzies faded into history.

Also in the 1970s oil embargo and resulting higher fuel costs it seems like everyone that was looking for an excuse to buy a Motorcycle bought one. There was a lot more bikes on the Road in the 1970s-1980s then now.

I have seen the local City Cops on BMWs for several years now.

Cool.

I have a BMW 1969 R-50 with a R 69S engine on it. The cylinders are worn beyond the last oversized piston and the heads are cracked (which some sites say is common).

I also have a BMW 1957 (can't remember if it is an R25 or an R26) single cylinder 250cc in extremely fair shape I brought back from when I was in the Army in Germany.
While I was driving in Germany it had an electrical failure which I never delved into.

I also have a basket case BSA A10.

Some day I need to get them working or sell them off as parts; which I am not ready to do now.

During the 70s and part way through the 80s the R50 was what I rode most often. Especially if I went on a long trip.

Pic of an 25 (not thrashed like mine)

Pic of an R69S (mine has a black frame. The bike was black and I painted the Fenders and Tank yellow note that someone had already paint the tank and the pinstripping black before I got it.)
