Watch Value
We have people of all back grounds and hobbies here so I figured I'd give his a try first.
I have a Jaeger-LeCoultre Master Mariner I got from my father a long time ago. His mother bought it for him back in the 70's. I am pretty sure it is 14k gold. It does not oxidize, the back has not worn off from wear. It is a day/date (can't find any examples of it on line). The watch was completely over hauled by Jaeger back in 1996. The watch runs great. I do not wear it often. The movement is probably a 9/10. Case is 6 or 7 out of 10. I am guessing it would polish up quite nice. Also, the movement is an automatic. Watch is similar to this but with the day inboard of the date. Anyone have any idea what a value might be. I have seen watches on line that are similar in the $2k-$3k range but I have seen others for a few hundred. Trying to figure out if it is worth getting appraised and insured. Thanks

you can always ck ebay
watch for sale
to get an idea of pricing. 14k or 18k should be stamped on it somewhere to which gold. Sometimes they are gold plated. I've got a 1995 E300 with 280k miles on it I'd be interested in swapping if you need another diesel MB. I've got a Bulova Space View and a couple of Vulcain Crickets. The Vulcain Cricket is a neat wristwatch with a killer mechanical alarm.

If it is solid gold, there is probably a proofmark somewhere on the watch, possibly on one of the tangs, but most likely stamped or inscribed on the inside of the caseback. Often these proofmarks have the metric equivalent of the gold purity (24 karat would be 1.00, 18 karat would be .750, etc.). Watch collectors prize originality. Refinished dials may improve the appearance of the watch, but could damage value. So does overzealous polishing of watch cases (sharp edges become dulled - watch has a slightly "melted" look).
Pricing? Try eBay or watchrecon. But first you have to know what you have. I would take a picture of the front and back, and post it on a forum such as watchuseek.com - Watch you seek is Watch you get! which has a pretty active Jaeger-LeCoultre forum. Someone probably owns a twin to your watch over there. I'm definitely a watch nut - I have about 17-18 watches, several are vintage solid-gold Hamiltons from the late '40s to mid 50's. |

Probably around $5k, if the case is gold as opposed to gold filled. But saying the movement was completely overhauled in '96 is like saying you bought new tires twenty years ago and haven't driven much since. It will need a fresh going over, and I wouldn't wind it unless it had fresh oil.
