Close Encounters

I've just come back from seeing Close Encounters of the 3rd kind in the theater. It's just been re-mastered and there was an interesting short docu before it with Spielberg and a few others talking about it. Quite interesting.

I had never seen the film before. Saw excerpts over the years but missed it when it came out and never did see the whole thing till now. My wife kind of dragged me off to it and I must say I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed it. A nonsense plot, more of a fairy tale than anything else, but I think it was a well done fairy tale.

What was most noticeable I thought were the special effects. Quaintly impressive would be a good description. Especially compared to modern films where everything is simply CGI to the extent that there seems little real craft left in production now.

- Peter.

Great movie. The craft is still there, just different tools. For the lights of the under side of the alien Mother Ship they filmed the San Fernando Valley down from MulHolland Drive at night and then flipped the image. Pretty brilliant.

The nice thing about movies of that era is the physical special effects really do last compared to the ever evolving world of CGI, where an older movie looks amazingly fake in short time.

I just recently was watching "total Recall" and my enjoyment of that oily rubber mutant glued to that guys chest has not diminished over the years.

I wondered how they did the mother ship. Neat. Total Recall is another one of my favourites. I just picked up "Logans Run" on DVD for a buck and a half at the antiques store last night. It'll look good right next to "Soylent Green" on my DVD rack.

MMMmm ,Solent Green ,eat your greens johnnney or no dessert. In the 70s a large void was filled in movie making industry ,it was less of a face to face drama sketch LIKE THE 50S and more of a singular person against the odds type of threatre. If Charlton Heston was casted you kind of knew what the movie had in store .Early Science Fiction was to blame .
