You might find one or a Volvo with the factory VW six cylinder diesel. Its slow but reliable....well as reliable as the VW diesels are.

Ha. From what I can find about them on the net they weren't "pinless grenades" but not as durable as even the ubiquitous TDI's. Surely if the VW six would fit under the "bonnet", an OM617 would...

I believe the VW engine is physically smaller than the 617, but still the 617 may fit just fine. The volvo 2.3 is ohc but the diesel may be pushrod.

My dad loved those old volvos. He thought the benzes were too complicated. I'm getting more like him everyday. Maybe I'll have to start driving volvos next.

Good call about the sump location - might have to get creative if you wanted that swap to work. I didn't realize the internal engine upgrades coincided with the last year for the 240. So there was only one year of the 245 with the best iteration of the D24?

Still somewhat of a minor issue to worry about honestly. I had a high mileage 1988 745 5 speed and a high mileage 1989 245 5 speed, both that never had any issue with piston slap. I wouldnt limit my search too much based on that alone. If you came upon something in great condition that was a little older than 90s id still consider it. Personally my primary criteria like looking at mercedes would be rust condition.

Ran across some pics of those, too - super stylish, and a stick-shift to boot which would suit the wifey just fine. Gonna be a couple years before I have that kind of money, though.
