Question about how to sell on EBay

Yesterday I listed a dining table set. Immediately got a response offering $75 more if I would reserve it and accept a cashier's check.

This smelled funny so I said would not accept cashier's check; would take payment through Paypal or credit card via EBay only.

Did I do the right thing?

It is easier to pick up cash from a bank. Then to go there to get a cashiers cheque. Unless I have missed something new. So it almost had to be a scam. Appealing to the greed factor of offering 75 dollars more as bait.

I might have responded. I am a hells angel a little down on my luck. So bring your cheque over. I need the money to probably post bail tomorrow. Bring identification and your drivers license so if there is any problem with the cheque. I can get a couple of our members to pay you a visit. What time is good for you?

There is an outside chance then you may never hear from the party again in my mind.

When they offer you over the asking price on eBay or CL, 99% of the time it’s a scam.

Seen it before. The scam is that they'll give you a check for more than the final bid, then ask for change. They'll never show to pick up the stuff and the check will bounce. The change you give them will never be seen again.

Paypal is remarkably effective when used for guaranteed payment, well worth the fee.

Yes; just received confirmation from eBay that this guy is a fraud. Just as I had suspected:

Hello tyl604,
Our records show that you recently contacted or received messages from joad7282 through eBay's messaging system. Were writing to let you know that an unauthorized third party may have compromised this member's account security. Its important to note that were unaware of any problems with your account. We recommend the following precautions to help keep you safe:
- Don't respond to offers to buy or sell an item from this user. The offer may be fraudulent, and the transaction won't be covered by eBay.
- Don't respond to any messages you received from this user that appear to be a Second Chance Offer for an item you recently bid on.
- Never pay for eBay items using instant cash wire-transfer services such as Western Union or MoneyGram. It's against eBay's Safe Payments Policy for a seller to request payment with these methods.
