Question Ford Engine, Any Good ?

2001 2.5 liter 4 cylinder with stick shift in a dinky little econo box .

I don't know how to search out known problems on the 'net .

Might buy this, it's cheap and not too beat up .

TIA,

Type "2001 Ford 2.5L problems" in the browser bar at the top of the page where you type in peachparts.com to get to this site and hit enter. You'll get more hits than you have time to read. I did a quick look and the consensus seemed positive.

Good luck!!!

I’m not sure, but I think it was the preceding generation that had a belt and the 2.5 had a chain. I have always been under the impression that the 2.5 which replaced the Pinto engine was a pretty solid engine.

Thumbs up ! THANK YOU !

As it turns, it was an auction and before anyone responded I bought the darn thing for $2,300, 117,000 miles and looks decent, seems to run well and so on .

Cold AC and only one small scrape on the passenger side, I'm going to get a ride over to pick it up this morning, wish me luck .

It has a 5 speed manual box, I hope my mangled knees are up to the task of driving it, I'm going to Death Valley this Spring as I always do and am hoping to drive it there .

I figured it has a cam belt, will report here what I find once I'm allowed a closer look see .

? Any thoughts on the best brand of timing belt ? .

I hate the darn things and always use factory original after seeing aftermarket Subaru belts fail under 60,000 miles this causes catastrophic engine damage far beyond bent valves....

I prefer timing gears then chains before any darn belt but it is what it is .

The only 2.5 that Ford produced in 2001 was for the Ranger, and that was a bored out lima engine. For an econobox you most likely have a 2.0 zetec?

Nate, I fully expect it will have a very light and easy to handle clutch pedal. Enjoy the trip.

Post What It Is

...Is a 2001 Ragner XL fleet model, only has AC & AM/FM radio, manual five speed tranny, no power anything in the cab, a rubber floor mat as is right and proper for a shop truck .

I hope to pick it up by noon, I'm ASS-U-ME-ing it has a cam belt I'll need to have changed ? .

I said 'econobox' because I didn't want anyone else to grab it, if it's as described for $2,300 and 117.000 miles with cold AC and so on it's a deal for me .

I'm 6' tall yet I have short 32" legs so econoboxes and smaller vehicles are always my first choice .

Ford Engine, Any Good ?-2001.ranger.xl.jpg

It appears I'm once again allowed to post photos .

Now I need to find out what typ of oil the gear box and final drive need, so on and so forth, I'll hopefully get it ship shape in time for my annual Death Valley trip .

Thanx ~ I'm one of those few who actually liked the various Pinto engines, they were stout and many lasted in rough service well past 140,000 miles on the original clutches...

I was surprised to see Pinto engines in small racing boats too .

I try to never thrash anything so I'm hopeful .

I once bought a VW Rabbit convertible with a bad clutch, the bum clutch meant I got it for $1,000 drove it for 10 years, to Canada and back, never did replace the clutch .

Fingers crossed here, expect major crying if / when this turns into a red turd .

Well in that case ignore my comment . Those are great basic trucks -- I had one as a delivery vehicle that had 345k on it and still going strong, despite a body that looked like a golf ball. They do have timing belts, but the Lima engine is really simple to do, and the cam gear sticks way out the front. 60k intervals I believe, so youre due assuming the service has been kept.

Trans is a Mazda unit and takes Mercon ATF. Rear diff, not sure.

I knew I could depend on you alls for the straight skinny .

Fords back in the 60's & 70's when I was a Dealer Mechanic used some sort of "friction modifier" in the final drive even if open diffy ~ I'd want to use fully synthetic if that's O.K. .

I actually own a little mazda like that....a 1998 I think. It has low miles and still looks good. It is my shop truck. My brother drives it and fixes things for me. He has had two or three rangers, and liked them all. Last one had a 6 in it and really loved gas. This one is a four with automatic and is plenty peppy and uses a lot less fuel. The five speed is same as what they put in a Miata I think and not the strongest link in the truck.

It is still running its factory original tires. They have lots of tread and no cracks in the rubber. I expect them to go wonky any time. My brother drives slowly so hopefully we'll get away with it.

O.K., I foolishly bought a vehicle off E-Bay on impulse without actually going to look at it, I think I did O.K. here, it runs fine and the clutch is hydraulic and I assume a diaphragm clover so it's very light and easy to operate, we'll see how my mangled knees like it in traffic .

Very little power, why they use a 5 speed tranny I think .

I'm sure it's in dire need of a tune up, I'll get busy soon .

The title was issued in 2001 so I guess that means one owner ? .

Will detail how it goes here if anyone wants to read my ramblings....

So far, so good .

I’m interested in hearing how it works out. As I said my daughter had one and I thought that it was a nifty vehicle. I was surprised when I got underneath it. It looked pretty sturdily built rather than a scaled down flimsy toy. It was a small truck and appeared to be built to use as a truck.

I thought it had plenty of power if you used the gearbox and power curve correctly. Don’t be afraid to rev it up a little and keep it in a lower gear when accelerating.

Post Still Learning It.....

Thanx .

I agree, it seems pretty stout .

I'm old so I don't like revving engines much, for emission reasons they don't make much power at low RPM's, this one is pretty sprightly if I keep it between 3,200 ~ 4,200 RPM, I can hear it buzzing although little if any actual vibration is felt .

I glanced under the hood and I'm pretty sure I saw a receiver - dryer so maybe it does have AC.....

I need to get some sleep and then some time to look at it closely, it rained so I just checked the fluids & aired up the tires and drove it .

Seems nice to me ~ solid and comfy, not fancy in any way .
