Needing real medicine is not a choice issue. I would have died with either of the two serious conditions I have had years ago. Both where corrected.

Well I guess earlier death would have been an alternate choice.

Certainly the cancer could have gone into spontainios remission. Or the anurisim in the main trunk artery of the abdomen may not have let go.

The wife had a very serious heart attack as another example.

I too look at the cost of living from time to time. We could cut back substantially if the need was there.

The problem is far too many in the population consisting of young families are becoming too financially stressed up here in Canada. Due to the inflation.

I am far from positive but we probably spend what their average incomes are. With everything we own paid for. As an old couple with conservative habits.

Start of this month automotive insurance jumped thirty five percent in the province next to us. So our turn is soon enough. The food costs are continuing to rise. By and large increases in the cost of living have not been matched by wage increases for the majority. At least in Canada. I hope and expect the same situation is not impacting Americans. I do not hear the groaning that is becoming louder up here with time on this issue.

The fat cats in government have become isolated from the realities of far too many. I doubt the majority of them even know that some people live from paycheck to paycheck. Other than in some abstract fashion. The north American population including Canada. Is no longer represented by a good cross section from all the economic sectors of society. One of the wives primary functions is a window on a segment of society she works with. A meeting once a month with two government employees to describe what she sees out there. There are strict rules of confidentiality on both sides.

I've sat in the courtroom and watched and listened to many medical bill cases. I believe one of the problems with health care delivery is the patient doesn't ask the doctor for a HARD WRITTEN QUOTE signed off by the doc himself. They might tell you the procedure/test/exam will "be affordable" (vague, right???) and then when you get the bill in the mail you have a heart attack.

You have to nail these snakes down to a hard written quote just as you would with a roofer, a plumber, an electrician or anyone else. Otherwise they'll bill you for unbelievable amounts and you will be stuck.

Fast forward to hospital bills. These need to be gone through with a fine tooth comb as hospitals are notorious for over billing and mis-billing. Don't be afraid to call them out on it and demand they adjust the amounts.

So, if I need open heart surgery Right Now, I should put out bids?

The crazy thing about heart surgery is this. The surgeon actually charges very little in comparison to what the hospital charges. Total tab might be north of $50K with the surgeon charging only a fraction of that amount.

BTW, only heart valve replacements are on my list. If you ever need one, pray to god it is the aortic because mitral is much messier. Several new heart valve technologies require low doses of blood thinners and the valve itself is quiet. Nice. Bypass is a killa dilla and will screw up both your heart and your brain. Plumbers clean out clogs, they do not BYPASS them. get it? I have two neighbors who have lost family members due to the heart bypass procedure, one recently died during the surgery itself.

Doctors incomes do not indicate they are the real problem with todays costs. They do make for a usable scapegoat though.

Many people travel to different countries where you can price shop and the outcomes are at least as good if not better than at home.

We as Canadians have a pre paid medical system. Yet a few pay above and beyond for operations outside the country. When the best treatment in the world is available for some of those operations in Canada. They never check they just assume.

One came out when a Canadian medical system doctor was questioned by an American senator. She simply told him that the Canadian that decided to have the complex heart operation done in Florida. He reffered to. That procedure was invented in Canada and we have by far the best outcomes in the world doing it. Question after question she just nailed his smug ass.

The creator of the heavens and the earth designed our bodies to function very well without surgery and drugs. Given half a chance, your body will right itself without surgery or drugs.

I'm thankful surgeons and hospitals exist but somehow I've managed to get through six plus decades without surgery or hospitals. I intend to keep it that way until my last breath on this earth.

A real good reason to pay your bills and don’t be in debt.

Easier said than done Air. Unexpected things come up during peoples lifetimes that may render them short on cash.
These situations may not entirely be the persons fault.

Tres Biggs went to jail for failing to appear in court for unpaid medical bills. He described it as "scary."
....

That policy was put in place at Hassenplug's own recommendation to the local judge. The attorney uses that law by asking the court to direct people with unpaid medical bills to appear in court every three months and state they are too poor to pay in what is called a "debtors exam."

If two hearings are missed, the judge issues an arrest warrant for contempt of court. Bail is set at $500.
.....

"We're sending them to jail for contempt of court for failure to appear," Hassenplug said.

Nevertheless, people in the US had been living longer and longer, until Obamacare "fixed" the US healthcare system. (It costs even more now, too!)

merc lover 02-19-2020 10:34 AM

As I stated earlier, the judge and the lawyer have managed to cross-contaminate civil law with criminal law. Normally, when someone is sued for a past due bill and fails to appear in court, the judge enters a default judgement against the debtor. No arrest warrant issues because this is a CIVIL matter.

In the OP, these two morons have managed to mix civil law with criminal law making a non-appearance by a civil defendant a crime.
