Well, although people should most certainly be held accountable for ALL their debts, it’s difficult to know how they can have a chance of earning funds to square them while cooling their heels in jail.

Indentured servitude is an option.

Not a great one, but an option.

The private-for-profit-jails get paid for holding you in their jails. The judges are in on it and have a financial incentive for locking people up. They don't even need a good reason anymore to throw your a** in the dungeon.

The particular type of lawyer who does this type of work is known as a Medical Bill Collection Lawyer. They make big money doing this type of work and they don't care if you are dying from cancer, they WILL COLLECT....one way or another!!!

The title is misleading. They were sent to jail for failure to appear not for failure to pay.

The medical debt issue is a separate issue and as a nation we should be embarrassed about it (but we are not). No body, much less a parent, should have to go into debt to save their kids or the life of anyone else.

Step back, take a deep breath and take a second look. The court has managed to cross-contaminate civil actions with criminal actions. When a defendant fails to appear on a civil matter, no arrest warrant issues. Normally, the judge merely enters a money judgement for the plaintiff. Call the next case, please.

This particular judge and his sidekick buddy lawyer have managed to turn a civil matter into a criminal matter. Gosh, I don't know about you but this really elevates my faith and trust in the so-called "system". I'm sure you feel the same.....

Next thing you know, they'll start moving to collect any and all debt using the same criminal actions. If you or your family member manages to be one day late on credit card debt, mortgages, student loans, medical, car loans, the twenty bux you owe the neighbor's son for mowing your lawn off to the dungeon you go. I hear they serve up fine cuisine in the local lock-up.

Many people cannot afford the loss of income sitting in a court. Waiting for their turn to be addressed. They have to work and the courts are not open weekends.

Most members on this site do not have to face all the various issues that a substantial percentage of the population have to face. Just because of a medical system that is stacked against them.

Many of the people that are satisfied with the status quo. May find the copays on a serious cancer case with themselves a real dose of cold water. You do have a few hundred thousand kicking around for this possibility? Simply as statistically it is far from a really remote possibility. Usually you will be tasked with a sporatic income while seriously ill. Plus the escalating accumulation of copays.

Reading between the lines a majority of the American population are going to be like deer in the headlights. The republicans are going to do a number on health care is almost certain if given the chance. Starting not long after Trump gets re elected. Premiums for health care have to double in cost to sustain what is over the next 10 years. Or deductables massively increased. The inflationary cost of health care is isolated from the general inflation costs. Compounded about 6-7 percent a year is not unrealistic.

I have as few interactions with doctors and hospitals as I can. Besides the risk of getting sued and thrown into lock-up, their drug machine can kill you deader than a door nail.

thank you but no thank you.

Leading causes of death:

1. Heart Disease

2. Cancer

3. Pharmaceutical drugs

4. Doctors and hospitals

You can't do much about #1 and #2 but #3 and #4 you have control over.
