Media-Driven shortages

There are plenty of threads already but I can't stop myself.

Does anyone really believe the toilet paper shortage is real? It is a product of our own selfishness that was started then fanned by the media. It has happened before and is no more real now than it was then.

If the TV "news" had instead said there was a shortage of toothpaste, there would be plenty of paper but the shelves would be bare of toothpaste.

Shortages of gloves and masks are probably also a product of media-driven selfishness. They are being bought up by those who have never needed them before, still don't and don't know how to properly use them anyway. Unfortunately, this can result in shortages for health care workers who truly need them.

The increase in COVID-19 cases is a product of increased testing and (I would guess) a probable increase in false positives.

What a Great News Period this is!

Are any of us capable of using our own native intelligence anymore?

Apparently not judging by the endless "liberal media" comments.....

It's not only an obvious fallacy and patently untrue yet the ignorants cling to it like a life raft in a choppy ocean swell .

People are worried about having to shred in place and the uncertainty of the future. They are a bit anxious because we have a president who is not forthcoming and is know for being a pathological liar and a poor leader.

I am watching the same 'media' everyone else is. It's the people watched my who blow that he out of proportion.

However consider that many folks go to the store once a week and buy roughly a weeks consumables to hold them over. All of a sudden there is a situation where stores may end up closing for weeks (months?) at a time, as well as questions around supply chain. Are you that surprised that shelves are empty? Never mind that schools and workplaces are closed -- so there is more strain on the household to provide things like TP.

But nah, its that evil media again. When all else fails, blame the media.

FWIW we bought probably 2x the amount of nonperishables as usual out of caution but did not make any special trips. I do not watch "the media", even have cable or a streaming service. Been paying attention to WHO reports, the CDC, and local restrictions. Probably the media's fault though.

Not me. Here there is 15 hours total (5 channels) TV news from 4:00p to 7:00p. With TV muted, I click through them trying to catch the weather. Usually I get so frustrated I give up. Surprisingly, last night I caught the weather, and another news article, neither of which mentioned (the "C" word). Turned off the TV & went about usual business for me, , , ,

Without media alerts, people might not get that it would help to refrain from engaging in risky behavior. Some percentage of people were going to panic. Oh well, we soldier on.

I am not worried having to "shred in place". Did my usual shredding today at home, going to stock up on scotch, and beer today.

I do not think so. You blamed the media on the shortages. He is saying that the shortages are our fault, not the media.

Maybe. But the medium is the message.
