Started with his girlfriend. After that event went south he prolly figured he was going way anyway ... and suicide was the only way out. And in his sick mind 'having fun' until he got caught was all he had left.

I wish people like that would start with the suicide first. This would save a lot of people a lot of grief.

In this current event he had some form of fantasy perhaps. As he was playing with some ideal over perhaps a couple of years. Somehow it got firmed up enough to act on.
People who are ill enough to mass kill...I would not make any assumptions about what drove it. Could have been seeing evil unicorns for all we know. I do not mean to trivialize but I think it is just beyond our realm of recognition.

I agree that it is too hard to really get a grasp on many times.
