What an idiot. It is a bit mind bending at first glance but it's actually an incredible display of physics. I wonder if he has ever been on a sailboat.

From the article.
"Created by Rick Cavallaro, a former aerospace engineer, Blackbird is unique because it can move directly downwind faster than the wind itself for a sustained period. Any sailor worth their salt can tell you that a boat can travel faster than the wind by cutting zigzag patterns; that's called tacking. But the idea that a vehicle can beat the breeze traveling straight downwind, no tacking involved, is controversial." https://www.yahoo.com/news/youtuber-bet-physicist-10-000-120100405.html Makes you wonder. How much money did he spend to win $10K? ![]()

It does seem counterintuitive, but I'd never make such a bet without testing and such to be sure. Ten grand is a lot of money.

A sailboat tacking on the wind I can understand. I listened to the explanation, I watched it happen, and it still sort of bends my head around. If they end up sailing de facto into a headwind why does the propeller keep behaving as though it has a tailwind?

I buy this explanation.

Think of the prop as having 3 sailboat sails. The wheels are driven by that and actually provide the forward propulsion. I think everyon's first reaction is to think that it is a traditional propeller driven vehicle, when in this case the prop acutally is there to harness the wind and drive the wheels.

Nope, just pressure and fluid dynamics. Super cool experiment/exposition.

A perfect example of a guy having an idea and going for it. Perhaps one day this will lead to something really useful in addition to being really cool!
