He was the first (may be second, depending upon who you listen to) black Navy pilot. Born 1926, died 1950, He was shot down in the N Korean war while flying his Corsair. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross posthumously. He also had a Frigat named after him...USS Jesse L Brown (FF-1089).

According to the site above, the movies main points are pretty accurate. We just watched it on Paramount+. Good movie.

Due to your post, I did a search on famous black people and black heroes. Lots of links dating back a few hundred years.

Yes, there have been many highly distinguished black military service members. Like Dr. King said: “Judge a man not by the color of his skin, but by the content of his character.”

Truman integrated the service in about 1948 or so, ending the all black units. Maybe Branch Rickey and him were working together. The Army and Major League Baseball were both better for it AFAIAC. As a result I served in the Army with people of all ethnicities mixed together. The outfits I served in were better for it and as a result I have a very precious life long friend that I otherwise would have never met.

A group of us from the warbird museum got together and went to see it a few months ago. It not only was a wonderful movie and story, but the true life saga described at the end was wonderful.

We have a very nice Corsair in the museum. Like all the planes there, it gets flown regularly. That’s one I will never have the pleasure to fly. It’s a real handful.
