Dallas, Texas Greyhound bus station to close.

It is said that the majority of Americans have less than $400 in their checking accounts or in savings. This means that the majority of America is broke which is not a good thing in my opinion. It also means that if the majority of America wants to travel and doesn't have access to a car, they have few, if any, options.

Enter the greyhound bus station.

https://www.msn.com/en-us/travel/news/greyhound-is-closing-its-dallas-terminal-leaving-low-income-travelers-in-limbo/ar-BB1hkcnP

I don't know too many people, myself included, that haven't had times in their lives where they were living on the edge financially speaking. The mayors of the cities where these bus station closings are happening need to step up to the plate and take care of the traveling needs of America's poor.

Doesn’t sound good. However, I’m not really surprised. Competition for urban Square footage is pretty intense.

yes, I was surprised to read that Greyhound does not own the Dallas terminal building. Most commercial airports that serve the public have very nice facilities and brand name restaurants serving the flying public. Bus riders, on the other hand, get kicked to the curb.

Perhaps that is the way of this world, those with the money get to enjoy the finer things in life and those without money continue to suffer.

They sold it.

To add insult to injury, Greyhound is headquartered in Dallas. That said, I have to imagine they saw this coming. Appears they liquidated assets a few years ago, I would guess they were/are counting on government to keep some real estate as a public service.

It’s been a long time since I last rode greyhound. Maybe 1976. Not that it pertains to the issue.

In the past, I rode their busses several times. It always seemed like the bus stations were dirty and not kept up. Looks like greyhound is out of the shipping business leaving all of us with fewer options. They were good for shipping car body parts, i.e. hoods, doors and trunk lids, etc.

Back in the late 70s, or maybe early 80s, Greyhound bought out their biggest competitor, Continental Trailways. It was also headquartered in Dallas.

They had a great terminal on Continental Ave., close to Industrial, which put them right off the Stemmons Freeway. This is within walking distance of downtown.

Today the area is pretty seedy. This terminal, which is still there, could be easily pressed into service. But the area is very unsafe. There are few areas in Dallas I would not go to after dark. This area is one of them.

Greyhound bough them not just to get their routes but to get their repair facilities which are quite large.

Greyhound some years back had a terminal in downtown Austin and the property there got so expensive they sold it and made a killing. They then build a new place on the north side of town near the intersection of I-35 and Hwy. 183.

The Greyhound terminal in downtown Dallas has become a hang out for street people. They have a lot of security inside the building but they are very open about the fact that outside can be dangerous. There are a lot of bad people that prey on travelers who step outside for a smoke or while waiting to be picked up.

It has become one of those places where it is hard to hail a cab.

I have used Greyhound twice-both times to buy vehicles in the Bay area about 4hrs from where I lived. Worked just fine. I used a city bus in San Francisco to get to the final destination.

Across the street from the Dallas terminal is a large parking garage with a high dollar gym on on the top. Done the block is the tallest building in Dallas. So it is land that is worth developing.

A federal court house and office building is perhaps two blocks away. It would not surprise me find they have a buyer lined up for the property.

Not shocking. Last time I rode a gray hound was a few years ago. It was ghetto. Smelly loud people, screaming kids, seats and floor were nasty, kind of like riding a city bus.

I'll second this. Check out JLR investigates concerning the migrant crisis in Eagle Pass, Texas on youtube.com. Each and every day, the U.S. government sends million dollar air conditioned Prevost buses to pick up the fence jumpers and and then transports them to all places north.

All free of charge, of course.

I looked into JLR investigates, could not navigate well there, if you know how to find articles about buses hauling people north, I would be interested to see it.

I’ve had some horror story rides on greyhound. Once I was hopping freights from Washington State down to the Mexico border so I could take a bus in Mexico to meet a friend of mine while he was still in Mazatlan. I had limited time and budget. The train I was on stopped outside of LA - Oxnard. I had to hitchhike through LA. Oh boy. I was having crappy luck, I did some quick phone calling, turns out I could catch a greyhound to Yuma, AZ and be there at 4 or 5 in the morning, and catching a freight from Yuma to Tucson would be a piece of cake.

I got to the bus on time. Hoping to catch some sleep, and behind me was sitting some loudmouth thug, who was witty enough to get all the losers on board into a laughing party good enough, with a little bit of libation present, to last all night.

At one point the bus driver came on the intercom, said there were families with children trying to get some sleep, could they keep it down. It was quiet for about 30 seconds until the thug guy said “what’s he gonna do, he’s just the driver?” They all laughed and started back up. The guy was fat, all mouth, no ass - geez I wanted to kick his ass. Would’ve been a disaster.

But I landed on my feet, I caught a freight in Yuma and made it to Mazatlan on time.
