Ferrari Monza SP1
My Ferrari buying buddy came to the meet up with this yesterday. A Monza SP1. The 1 must stand for "one seater." There is also a Monza SP2.
![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() This must be the car for Ferrari owners who don't want to pick up chicks. Check the inch and a half tall windscreen in front of the driver. He said over 80 it works great. Under that, it came with some Ferrari approved goggles in a nice looking case. I asked him if it was a V-8, he said nope, V12. Search reveals it's a 6.5L, 800 hp unit. Sounds wicked.

Thanks for sharing. Looks like it would be a pia to have to work on that engine.

At $2 million, I would leave that to the specialist...

I'm guessing that a trip through an automated car wash would be interesting...

He is somewhat capable with the small stuff, but for belt changes and the like he takes it to a guy named Patrick Ottis in Berkeley. Who would've thought, one of the better Ferrari specialists around, at least in California is in Berkeley. Dude is really into it, he goes to Europe checking out boneyards for Ferrari parts. I imagine any boneyard that has anything Ferrari related is high-end. My guy says he's had incredibly good luck with eBay. Most anybody selling Ferrari parts has a long distinguished track record.
One time he told me he was taking his F150 in to get the belts changed. Engine has to be pulled of course. I'm not sure how you get it out of this thing, probably drop it down, essentially lift the body off of it, same as with the F150. So far I've seen: Late 50s AC Bristol, DOHC 6 Ferrari F50 Ferrari 308 Ferrari 250 GT Lusso, '63 I think Porsche 911, I forget the suffix This Ferrari Monza right here.

One guy at the meet up remarked that's an awful lot of car for one guy. I would certainly want a second seat. Seems like it needs a slightly better windscreen for around the town use. Prolly won't get much of that. He said yesterday was the first time he's driven it in California, the odo went from 95 to 102, or would by the time he got back home. He bought it used in Florida (?!), Drove it about 30 or 40 miles there. It's registered in Montana because it wasn't street legal until some recent work he had done.

Surprised the hell out of me. A longtime client of mine has a house in Orinda, a toney town east of Berkeley, near the larger and also upscale Lafayette. It's across some formidable hills from the east Bay, seems to give them a little bit of geographic separation, plus there are a lot of cops in this town, not uncommon for towns in a high tax bracket.
My client's husband died in 2000, he built an apartment above the garage, it's not complete garbage, but it has a lot of problems, he was an amateur. The kitchen was pretty rough, I am remodeling it, and fixing a bunch of other stuff while living there. It could easily rent for $2500, and she needs the money. There's also a cottage out front I might be able to live in as soon as we get this one rented, because there's a lot more work that needs doing on the property It is so quiet in this neighborhood. I don't think she's ever had a theft - 40 years plus. They have an auto show down in the neighborhood of the coffee shop where we have the meet up, the next one is September 7. Word is there's going to be something like 15 original Cobras. A guy brought a BMW M1 to one of the meet ups. Mid engine, in-line six, I think it's that S88 engine. Pretty rare, pretty wild. I think he'll be at the auto show, I hope so. I'll take photos.

Indeed. He is really cognizant of how you can screw up value if you make a mistake with anything. Most of his cars he sells for a small profit. He said he figures he'll at least break even on this one.

I was wrong on that engine, it was the M88. I didn't realize the horsepower it could put out with different tuning. I found this:

I addressed that in post #7. I forget what the issue was but it wasn't street legal in Florida so the first owner registered it in Montana. No idea if my buddy is going to switch to California. It's not high on my list of concerns.

WOW! A really unique and incredible car. I’m curious, how did he get ahold of it?
