Well mine was a leaving gift from my old guv'nor he'd sold the company and gave me the car as a present for loyalty. He even rang me up and hoped I wouldn't be offended by the gesture. We remain firm friend's.The only proviso being that if I ever sell the car he gets first dib's on buying it back. What a nice chap.best guv'nor I've ever worked for

I just noticed that your question was for the cheapest price anyone paid for a running MB.

The car he bought wasn't actually running when he bought it...

I'll hedge on that if the intention is to get it running and not just a parts car. Would like to hear tales of El Cheapos say under $500.00 dollars that are now being driven and what they needed done to them to be road worthy..........

Well, I bougth my 75 240D for $310 on ebay. It ran fine once we got the fuel system reprimed. It lost prime again a couple of days later ater I got it home. Looks like the primer pump itself is shot so bad that it leaks air into the system. The car isn't on the road yet due to this and a myriad of other things that need to be done, that I haven't gotten started on yet. I've only been in the last week or so, in a condition to be able to contemplate work that needs to be done due to a back injury.

I spent $1,300 on the 4.5 and only had to put $0.39 into it the first year.

The 560 set me back about $2,500 and four months of work to get in roadworthy (but the engine was running - only needed chain and rails). I put another $1,000 in parts and tires. and so far the year it has cost me about $0.75/mile to operate (includes: gas, oil, parts + labor (if any) and purchase price, license and registration). At the rate I'm going it'll probably be down to <$0.25 by years end.

Bought a 1978 450SEL for $500. A fellow was selling it because it was his son's restoration project and his son had to move to california from virginia and told his dad to let the car go. I came to see it and my jaw dropped - the car was perfect. The interior was brand new (new leather seats still wrapped in plastic), wooden steering wheel, all wood was replaced, etc. The problem was - the car wouldn't start. I was planning to have it towed outta there but after I paid the guy $500 and I decided to look and see if I could start it (it spun fine under starter, just wouldnt start). I noticed there was a bag of brand new distributor cap and wires inside the car, so I figured - may be something is wrong with it. Replaced it in the guy's garage and she fired right up - she drove out of there on her own. I later found alot of papers in the glove compartment - found a receipt for some of the new interior stuff - $2000 worth of it.

There is an '86 190E for sale down the street...was going for $2500, now down to $2300.

Waiting to see how far down they drop the price, and maybe, I'll grab it!

Thumbs up The Price Is Right!

This is an excerpt from my first post on this forum:

November 2001- Family friends buy a slightly used 1999 E300 Turbo Diesel but the dealer would only give them $2000 for their well cared for 1987 300 SDL, 198K. Deal- if I would drive the 300 SDL to South Florida delivering their personal effects I could have the car!!! Left Cape Cod Thursday Nov. 1 at 8pm and returned Sunday Nov. 4 11pm, 3142 miles/53 hrs. driving = 59.28 mph avg. Most of the time I drove 83 cruise control or faster with the pedal when no officials in sight. Traffic in NYC and Jacksonville FL on the way down and DC and NJ/NYC on the way up was slow bumper to bumper rush hour traffic. Between Jacksonville and Daytona I ran long straightaways and flat sweeping curves for nearly an hour between 95 and 103 the top speed. I burned 111 gal. of fuel = 28.3 mpg. Fuel cost between $1.56 and $.99 =$1.28 per gallon, $142. fuel cost. So for 4.5 cents per mile I spent over two complete days driving an fine specimen of Germanys' steel and diesel autobahn grinders. The car handled great at all speeds as long as I remembered it was 5000+= pounds and 18-foot long. Never missed a beat, and in my mind, purred the whole way. I got it for nothing (practically), I'll probably end up selling it, wish I always lived the "Mercedes" life, and wonder if I could ever put that motor in my boat? Yeah man, Life Can Be Good!!! How's that for entertainment value!!!!!! I'm even happier because found this forum. P. S. I almost forgot the $30 post trip oil change was like a 15% tip on a meal.

The combined experience of driving and maintaining the car along with the interaction with the collective wisdom and generosity of this forums membership = priceless!Thank you!

1974 280

This summer, I bought my yellow 1974 280 w/ brown MB Textile for only $600 in running condition - and with no rust! Interior was in good shape too. I had a fuel pump installed, (this was first attempt to work on cars and I wanted to have a professional look at it.) I worked up the courage to replace the belts and alternator myself, and - it has been a great driver since. I don't know why the owners decided to let it go for that price...but it was in good shape to begin with and has been a joy to drive.

And so the addiction began...I am normally VERY conservative with my money, but it is easy to spend it on a classic MB because I love these cars and have a big driveway!

I picked up a 1973 280SEL 4.5 for $800, but it needs some work, and I get to it from time to time. This weekend I plan on acquiring a 1978 450 SEL for $700 - and it is in running condition.

My driveway will be completely full. So I will have to sell one of my non-MB vehicles to cover restorations and make room for another one.

nice Chtistmas present to read this again ,was just reading Car and Driver can hardly belive the prices of gimmick cars I would not want taking up space in my driveway if they were free. In 1981 I bought a very well built three bed room house with a large stone fireplace and a big screen porch on Whitefish point in the U.P. of Michigan for $16.500 I lived there five years in peace and quiet.......... perhaps "there's a sucker born every minute" is alive and well........
