Home Computer Network Advice

I just signed up for DSL and I'm going to network my two home computers together.

I'm not sure that I can get ethernet wiring from one computer to the other. Wireless is an option, but it is a little pricey and there are the security issues.

HomePNA, using existing phone lines is the most viable option, but I'm concerned about speed.

Advice.

thanks

JCD

My setup is Linux on a computer that's a little too slow for Windows these days. RedHat 7.2. It then has a second network card to distibute bits to the rest of the Windows network. Linux is easy to set up to do something called "IP Masquerading" which is a fancy way of saying it routes your traffic to the proper place transparently.

Then you can get a $100 NetGear wireless hub to handle any laptops you want to move around with.

Linux is also easy to set up as a solid firewall, just make sure you turn off most of the unnecessary services.

Here's the commands in a /bin/sh (shell) script I run when the Linux box is starting:

iptables --flush
iptables --table nat --flush
iptables --delete-chain
iptables --table nat --delete-chain
iptables --table nat --append POSTROUTING --out-interface ppp0 -j MASQUERADE
iptables --append INPUT --in-interface ppp0 -m state --state NEW,INVALID -d ! 224.0.0.1 -j LOG --log-prefix "Rogue Packet from ppp0:"
iptables --append INPUT --in-interface ppp0 -m state --state NEW,INVALID -j DROP
iptables --append FORWARD --in-interface ppp0 -m state --state NEW,INVALID -j DROP
iptables --append FORWARD --in-interface eth0 -j ACCEPT
echo 1 > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_forward

-------------------------------
May not be what you want to do but may help someone else.

The problem with using Windows directly to the public network is that it doesn't easily distribute all traffic to the rest of the private network, plus it's pretty vulnerable unless you add on additional firewall software.

Note: This topic for how to do home networking is just as controversial as what oil to put in your Mercedes.

home phoneline ones willw ork at 10 or 11 mbps in most cases which is mroe than fast enough and way faster than the actual DSL speed, which is really no where close to 10 mbps.

Phoneline works well enough, and I have used the linksys phoneline stuff and it has always worked well.

BTW My broadband suppliers told me not to use the Windows 2000 / Windows XP built in internet connection sharing, but didn't say why. I've tried it though, and it seems to work ok.

Are the two computers mobile? If not, wireless may be overkill and not needed.

Cool from our experience this one is awsome

if you can run wire between the computers...

Linksys BEFSR41 Etherfast cable/dsl router.

find details at www.linksys.com

they also have wireless

You guys are good

Neither of the laptops are mobile. I was just really concerned about the HomePNA option from a speed perspective.

Looks like the plan is to try to run ethernet cables and use the ethernet router, if not, then fall back on the Home PNA option.

In any event, I am looking at Linksys equipment for both the ethernet and HomePNA option.

Thanks again,,,,,

use ethernet when you can. the phonelink technology is ok but can be prone to AC interference depending on location. also, i don't know if you are using the same line for DSL or a dedicated phone line. while in theory analog voice + digital data should all work together i have heard otherwise.

re: DSL=> if cable is available - you should consider that. it is cheaper and much faster than DSL for less money.

Thanks Joe

Cable, in my area, is more expensive that DSL, both start-up and ongoing. Go figure.

Again, thanks to all for your help.
