Hi. I keep thinking I am solving this idle problem with this Subaru I have. It is an 87 with a carb engine. I have replaced thus far: pcv valve, fuel filter, air filter, breather filter, spark plugs and have checked and cleaned the egr valve. It passed emissions so I am inclined to think that the carb is ok. I know zilch about carbs so I'm trying to do everything I can besides that. There is no idle speed screw that I can find anywhere. Spark plug wires look ok too. Flow seems good when I check at the tailpipe. I have also replaced vacuum hoses and checked for other leaks. I heard no more hissing sounds after doing this, and that seemed to help also.
Sometimes it will hold idle at 800 rpm no problem, and then next time it will hang down around 200rpm. Won't stall though. It doesn't matter if it is hot or cold either. One thing is if I put the ac on, it holds the idle at 800 rpm nice and steady. What does this point to? Anybody could throw something at me I'd love to hear it. I was thinking ignition timing. I've got a guy who will buy it as is, but I'd really like to figure it out before this weekend because it's driving me nuts. Thanks for any suggestions.

Just a guess - is there any mechanical throttle linkage that may "move" and allow the idle to drop?

I'm not sure I'll have to check tomorrow if I don't work. Thanks for the suggestion, I'll take anything I can get. Anyone else out there ? Or does anyone know a little about carbs to walk me through what to look at? Please? Thanks.
