seat stuck in recline

I have an '86 300SDL with the seat stuck in the recline position. Do i have to remove the whole seat to repair it, or can I access something somehow to get the seat back up?

The problem is very likely the seat switch. If you have a wiring diagram you should be able to figure out where to jump power and ground to to be able to raise the backrest. Then replace the switch. Or if you're a gamblin man you can just try a new switch.

not the seat switch

i put in the switch from the '87 560SEL and the seat back still will not move. All other movements on the seat work fine, just the back, absolutely nothing. No fuse blowing no dimming of lights just nothing at all? ideas?

jcciem,

Did you try both switches? I had problems in my '87 560SEL and found that only one switch was bad but it took a bit to isolate the problem as even the good switch won't work if the other is not functioning correctly. Also, it has been pointed out here in previous discussions that the recliner won't work if the door is open.

As for removing the seat, if you have the CD service manual and go through it carefully, there is a section detailing how to remove the seat. It's hard to find, and not where you would expect it (I think it's in the section on replacing the rear shocks as access to the top mounting is from behind the seat). I seem to recall that you start with the two bolts on the bottom frame at the front.
