Modem Speeds
Hi Brian:
Read your post about your modem speed. By chance, are you living in a new home or a subdivision? Have you connected at faster speeds before? It may be that there is a bridge between you and the phone company, and that always tends to slow things down. The phone company guarantees their lines to 28.8, and that's about it. I have friends that perpetually connect at 26.4. No cable modem providers in your area? -Michael.

Michael,
Thanks for your reply, I am currently staying in a subdivision, but I will only be here for 2 months so I thought it pointless to invest in cable or dsl. So I guess 28.8 k is about as good as it gets dial-up wise huh?

Hey:
Unfortunately Brandon, I'm afraid so. My friends have struggled with this for some time now. The phone companies are really apt to use bridges to bunch large amounts of phone lines running back to the central office. This degrades severely on performance. They are definitely present in newer homes. My parents home was built in the early 1900's -- they can get connections up to 53k. Usually around 50-51 though. Hang in there! Regards, Michael.

Thanks Michael,
The other computer in the house is on cable. Can I tap into the cable and get service or would I have to update with my ISP and pay more $. Thanks again

Don't give in just yet!!
There are some other things you can do to increase your connection speed. You would have to tell me a little more about your connection (i.e. how long has it been at 28.8 and brand of modem and is it a new modem and is it in a different location in the house, etc.) but we can try some fairly simple modem settings such as initialization strings to enhance your speed.
Also, around here (Michigan) the phone companies only guarantee 14.4 connection so anything more than that is "ok" as far as they are concerned. Is this something that occured "all of a sudden" or has it been doing this on and off forever? Has there been any lightning in your area since this happened? My first test would be to go to the manufactureers website and download the latest and greatest driver for the modem. (mfr of the computer, not the modem)

Could also lay at the feet of your ISP. Mine has a large bank of 56K modems and when those are all tied up the system diverts to the 32.6K bank then to the 28.8. Sometimes I'll connect at less than 45K so I'll disconnect and retry, usually snagging a 56K. Could also be in the phone cable or your modem as has been suggested. Try logging off and on see if you connect at greater speeds.

Bring the cable from the other computer to an inexpensive 4 port router (D-link, Linksys, SMC or others) and then connect from the router to both computers with some network cards . Here's just an example:http://www.overstock.com/cgi-bin/d2.cgi?cid=2167&PAGE=PRODUCT&PROD_ID=52602&fp=F

Brandon,
JBA's suggestion about a Cable/DSL router is, by far, the best choice. If you already have cable modem access in your home, then I would take the first opportunity to dump those ol' dial-up connections. The Cable/DSL router costs about $40-60 depending on what brand you get. You plug your cable and your two PC's into the router, and the router manages all of your network connectivity. It assigns "private" IP address to each of your machines (192.168.whatever), and the router itself takes up the IP address. You can have as many connections as the router will support. The only trick is to put the router in a central location that would allow BOTH PC's to be easily hooked up to it. We can get really creative with wireless points of access, but if you don't need that, it's not worth the hastle. Let me know if you need help with this -- would be glad to help out. Am a network admin. myself and could probably walk you through the setup. Pax! Michael.

this trick used to work with the older win9x OS's. go to your device manager and find out what com port your modem is running on. then go to your com port properties and change the port settings to the max allowed. if you can't connect at faster speeds, its the phone company's lines (which we have no control over).

I usually connect at 48kb unless its raining. Then I've seen it as low as 300 I stay away from the "Everybody post your pictures" thread then.

Locate the make and model of your modem and write the info down. Visit the makers web site and find the page with "drivers" or support/software/etc...
Check to see if you have the most up to date drivers on your machine, usually you never see a connection lower than 33k unless the drivers are old, even with bad phone lines near your home. Once you update you will usually connect at a minimuin of 44k and possibly 50k. Do you know how to look up your driver version? |

roas,
I have searched for updates via windows xp shortcut menu in the device manager. Still no luck, got a message saying updates were unsuccessful. Lucent Win modem is the type. Maybe I'll try to go directly to the web site and retrieve the driver rather than doing it via update option on the shortcut menu. Thanks for your help
