Windshield replacement woes
I just want to share some experience regarding cost of replacement of w/s {300E-1986). I live in the NYNJ metro area where nothing is cheap, except for hot dogs and coffee from coffee carts.
Here is the dope: I got a quote from safelite (two different NJ locations listed on the Y/pages) for $222.18, plus taxes. I wanted to give some local guys the business, but the one I knew nearby wanted 350 plus tax and another place 250 plus (plus some other possible charges that --the lady stated-- "may occur"). So I called Safelite back to see when I could make an appointment. The old witch that answered the phone this time (had to be an unemployment claim examiner in her previous life) wanted every bit of information including insurance company, details that were not necessary as I was going to pay with a credit card and later summit the docs. and see if my company would reimburse me for part of it at least. All I need to know from her was when could I have the job done. Surprise, in the middle of her bs, she tells me that the cost is 257 plus tax. I explained to her that a few minutes ago the quote was 222. She said impossible, no way. I told her I wrote the figure down twice. Back and forth a couple of minutes and I knew I was going nowhere with the ogre. It was like arguing with the local librarian. When she gave me the"take it as I say or leave" I left. Called the main 800 number, asked for a supervisor, and here is the good news: The original quote of 222 was correct from the beginning. What the witch was "selling" me was a windshield with MB emblem on it. According to the very helpful supervisor it is the same glass and the difference is simply because his company has to pay MB for the use of their emblem. If I wanted it without it, it was 222.18. I checked this site on w/s replacements and also the BBB on complaints. The company has a good report. The supervisor who took care of my complaint was super decent. But, why the new price? When I gave the witch the name of my insurance company the ''program'' apparently automatically raised the price to 257. The idea is, why ***** buddy if it is the insurance company, not you, the one that will pay? Now, I have no way of proving this, but I am posting this info to suggest to you, that you should get your estimate or quote as if you were going to pay it yourself (which you will in the long run). Closing of the sermon: our country is not doing too well in the integrity department; greed and lack of regard for the customer seem to reign; so, it is up to us to take the chalk and draw the line. Once or twice, if necessary. |
