I remember reading in a car mag in the late 70's that a AMC Gremlin could actually take on those Firebirds of the late 70's in a stop-light drag. Not sure how true, but believable with the way they de-tuned those cars then

Okay here goes..

'77 Alfa Romeo Spider Veloce - Terminal Body Rot
'84 VW Quantum GL5 Wagon - BIG mistake
'85 Honda Prelude DX (The Little Honda that Could)
'88 Acura Legend L Coupe (5-speed, fast, but oh the torque steer)
'89 Honda Accord LX - Slow, American-made, never the same after the accident..
'94 Mazda Miata - Sold to my mother-in-law
'92 Audi 100CS Quattro Avant - Audi makes a gorgeous car, but thank GOD it had a warranty!
'89 VW Cabriolet - Don't ask.
'84 BMW 533i - Fast, fun, cost me $1000 every time I looked at it
'99 VW Jetta Wolfsburg - feh.
'91 300E 2.6 - Pretty, slow, wierd FI issues.
'70 Fiat 850 Spider - The Disposable Sports Car!
'95 Volvo 850 Turbo Wagon - Stupid Fast, got bored.
'84 300D/T - Slowly headed to its new home, GREAT CAR!
'97 BMW 328iC - In 5-speed may have been woth my time, just a car otherwise, and the power top was a disaster..
'01 Saab 9-5 - Neat car, love the styling, didn't need a $30K car..
'95 Accord Wagon - Great at what it does, anonymously
'70 BMW 2800 - Near mint, original, TERRIFIC car!
'90 300CE - en route... Who knows?

Whoever it was that said that he didn't buy the Audi because of the anticipated repair costs - DEAD RIGHT! It was a wonderful car to drive, if not a little slow, beautiful interior - I like all the gauges, and I really liked the red glow, but mechanically it was a symphony of smells and warning lights.

Now what's on your WISH LIST (speaking realistically, not cars that cost more than HOUSES!!)?

My (somewhat esoteric) list includes:

Early Porsche 911
Alfa GTV
560SEC (or a super-clean 500SEC Euro)
300SEL 6.3
BMW M5 (Any generation)
R129 300SL 5-speed
98-99 E300TD
'01 BMW 740i Sport
300CE/E320C Cabriolet
VW Jetta TDI Wagon
...and a lot more I can't even think of right now

1) Dodge 3/4 ton or 1 ton truck with the Cummins B-series diesel and either a 5sp or a 6sp. Regular cab, 4x4. Any year will do

2) VW Jetta TDi 5sp (sadly, in addition to getting almost 50mpg, the new ones are considerably faster than my 300D, although I don't know how well one would drive on an extended freeway run).

3) Freightliner FL-50 crew-cab with an 8.3l Cummins and manual trans; ultimate family/RV hauler

4) 1959 Cadillac station wagon, completely restored, turned into a stock-looking sleeper with a 426 Hemi (like I said, I don't like GM engines ). This is the only g@$$er that I'm readily willing to own.

5) The '85 300D I have now

6) The '84 F-250 I have now

I'm gonna need one heckuva garage!! Fortunately my dad has a 160 acre plot in souther Colorado...

The way I see it, in a perfect world a person would have four cars -- a commuter (in an area where mass-transit infrastructure is woefully undeveloped, at least), a comfortable and classy Sedan, a purist sportscar, and a beater for carrying stuff or towing. Here's what I'd want for each:

Commuter:
An efficient but classy high-tech modern commuter car, something the US government won't let me have. I'd take one of the following: M-B A190 lwb, Audi A2, Citroen C3 Pluriel. The BMW Mini is close, but not nearly as much space or practicality as the above three.

Sedan:
My current 1968.5 Citroen DS-21 modified with a lightweight engine that's considerably more powerful, refined, and efficient than the iron-block pushrod 4 Citroen shipped it with, such as the M-B 3.2L twinspark V6, Subaru H4, VW VR6, or a non-turbo Mazda rotary, as well as new hubs to support modern wheels and tires. A tiptronic-style automatic or CVT transaxle would also be glorious. Oh, and the development of the brilliant hydropneumatic suspension used on the mid-1990s Xantia Activa. But one mustn't get greedy.

Sportscar
A Lotus Elise. Since, the government doesn't want me to have one, though, a Panoz AIV (made here in Georgia using some of the highest technology in the industry) is the next best thing, but I'd REALLY want the lithe little Lotus!

I prefer the idea of a lightweight, fuel-efficient, ecologically sensitive useless car to a heavy, huge-engined, gas-guzzling one.

Practicalmobile
In a perfect world, I'd combine this one with my commuter, and drive a Citroen C3 Pluriel. (The Pluriel can be a sedan, spider, or pick-up.) However, if I had a boat or something I'd be looking at a W124 TE, perhaps massaged with a 400E's driveline...

Its like attaching names to those notches!

There were so many
each one in its own special way
All had their plus points and lessons
None as special as the one that followed
The memories of all the cars driven are context driven now
So cannot really compile a list
Nuff said
Love the one you are with (as a song states)

18 cars in 42 years, including THREE Renaults!

1949 Studebaker Champion (1960-1962: a real chickmobile)
1954 Hudson Hornet Convertible (1962-63 with "Twin H-Power!")
1951 Chevy Deluxe Fastback 2-door (1963-64 the green urinal) The most uncomfortable car ever made)
1961 Thunderbird Convertible (had a wreck and the Hartford Insurance Co. didn't want to send a check, so I bought extra wheels)
1958 Renault Dauphine ($150 wonder)
1954 Buick Roadmaster 2 door HT (traded even for the Renault after it seized: the guy liked the sunroof so he could poach deer while his wife drove).
1961 T Bird again (fixed, drove it for 8 years, 1964-1972)
1969 Renault 10 (1972-1976)
1971 Renault 16 (1976-1981)
1974 Dodge Colt SW (1981-1983 wife's car)
1974 Dodge Colt SW II (1982-1987)
1977 Toyota Celica GT Fastback (1982-1995)
1980 Toyota Corona 4 dr. (1987-1992)
1984 Nissan 200SX (1994-1996 had been flooded by Hurricane Andrew: caught fire and burned wiring harness)
1982 Buick Regal 4-door (1996-1998, after I had it all fixed up, an incompetent thief stole it, and mostly just screwed it up: wiring ruined during attempted theft, car caught fire and burned)
Current cars:
1989 Hyundai Excel ($250 wonder spare car, now with 104K: can be outdragged by ailing Rabbit Diesels 1986-present)
1990 Mercedes 300D 2,5 Turbo (1999-[present)

All Mercedes and one Audi ugh never again. Here is my list in chronological order of the year they were made not in order of ownership;

1975 280 - Yellow, brown MB tex (my first benz, i loved it that car had character)
1979 450SEL 6.9 - Dark blue, parchment leather (WHAT A CAR and still WHAT A CAR, 2 bad im not an oil sheik)
1981 280TE - Gold, tan MB tex (sorely missed work horse)
1981 280SE - Off white, cream leather (nothing but trouble)
1986 230TE - Pajett Red, cream MB tex (in a write off accident after only 1 month)
1989 300TE - Smoke silver, red MB tex (still have it, dying for an overhaul and a myriad of other things)
1992 Audi 90 Sport (worst car ever had, only had it 6 months and it needed a new gear box, new radiator totalling 5k in repairs, sold it at a loss of 9k in 6months)
1994 E280 - Midnight blue, blue leather (My current car, Id have to say the best so far, and by far the quickest)
1996 Ssangyong Musso IL3200 - Silver, grey cloth (never heard of it? A korean built four wheel drive sold through Mercedes Benz dealers using a mercedes licenced M104 3.2litre 6-cylinder. Pretty good drive but nothing like a Mercedes-Benz)
1997 C200 Elegance - Silver, grey cloth (a bit dull and characterless, but the most reliable Benz ive had.)
