W202 Wheel Upgrade Problem!!!!
First of all, I would like to apologize if this topic has been discussed earlier. I tried to search the archives first and came up with hundreds of possible topics.
I have a 1998 w202. I recently upgraded my wheels to a 5-spoke (came from a 1999 E430). I thought this was a perfect fit for the car. Does anybody know if this is not possible without any modifications? Since I installed the new wheels, I noticed that when I am backing out, and my wheels are turned all the way to the left or right, I hear a grinding/squeaking sound. I don't hear it moving forward with the wheels turned all the way. I would like to know if anybody in this forum has experienced the same thing. If you have a w202 and you upgraded your wheels I would like to talk to you about it. Thanks. JC

I've got a 2000 C240 sport fitted from the factory with 17" AMG alloys. This car came from the factory with rolled fenders.
I've got the Mercedes-Benz wheel upgrade brochure, too. If you want to fit 17" aloys to a W202, you probably need to roll the fenders. If you want to fit 18" wheels, you definitely need to roll the fenders. I don't know what wheels you've got, but the sizes on the W202 (C-Class) and W210 (E-Class) are not necessarily interchangeable: W202 takes these: Front: 7.5J x 17 T 37 Rear: 7.5J x 17 ET 37 or 8.5J x 17 ET 30 W210 takes these: Front and rear: 7.5J x 17 ET 35 or 7.5J x 17 ET 37 or 8J x 17 ET 37

I think its the offset!
I could not help but remove all the wheels again and put back my old set. I think my problem has something to do with the OFFSET.
The original rims for the W202 came with 7.5J x 15 T 37 mm. The upgraded rims I got from the W210 are 7 1/2 16 41mm Can anybody tell me if I can do anything (simple or no major modification required) to make the upgraded rims fit in my W202? If not, I will just have to sell it. Thanks. JC

This is the handiest online tool you can have for deciding what offsets will work: wheel offset calculator
Your new setup essentially shifts the entire wheel inward by 4mm, meaning you have 4mm less clearance on the inside of the rim and 4mm less extension on the outside of the rim. IMHO, 4mm won't likely cause your problems BUT you haven't mentioned what size tires you've gone to. Perhaps you've changed the overall diameter of your rim/tire combo? As you increase rim diameter, you need to decrease you're tire's aspect ratio (sidewall thickness) to maintain stock diameter. This online tool will help you determine the dimension changes resulting from your choice of tire sizes: tire calculator

W202 takes 16" wheels in these sizes:
7J x 16 ET 37 8J x 16 ET 36 So it would seem that your wheels have too great an offset. I do not know what the effects of this will be, though. The W210 wheel in 7.5J x 16 ET 41 takes tyres in size 215/55 R16. I think that is a fairly obscure size; if fitted with wider tyres (eg 225s), this will exacerbate your offset problem. One solution for you is simply not to reverse on full lock. It's best to avoid using full lock all the time anyway, leave a couple of degrees of steering left.

Let me know if you want to sell them. I've been lusting after the 5 spokes ever since I bought my car and found out how tough the bottle cap wheels are to clean. And 16's are what I want because my nice new Michelins will fit.

Clarification!
I just realized that what I have is the 5-hole. The stock wheels that came with the 97 E420 4-matic.
Also, IF you are interested in it, you will have to buy the tires with it. I have no use for it. Go to tirerack and look at the wheels for the 97 E420. Let me know if you have any questions. JC

Exactly!
The wheels are the exact same one you have there.
I have somebody who is interested in buying the whole set (4 wheels and tires) from me this weekend for $825. It that does not happen, would you still be interested? Let me know. Send me your email address if you want me to send you more pictures. Thanks. JC

Just hit the email button at the bottom of my post.
As for whether I'm still interested, that depends on a couple of things. I saw in the classifieds that these rims have winter tires on them. Being in Florida, that does absolutely nothing for me. The tires will substantially raise the cost of the shipping, and I can't use them anyway. So if you'd be willing to separate them I might be interested. The other deciding factor is that I will be on vacation on Las Vegas next week. We'll see if I have any money left by the end of the week.
