The unpopular 3.8 L

Is it true that my engine was used for rally driving or something like that? I think I remember someone mentioning that to me a few years ago and saying it was also a very good engine with a strong bottom end.

The 5.0 liter in the 500SEL was used in the 450SLC 5.0 coupe, which was a homologated version of a Mercedes factory rallycar that was very competitive in the late 1970s.

A tech at a Mercedes shop mentioned to me that the bottom end of the 3.8 should be good for 400,000 plus miles with care. Pretty good for an aluminum engine...

While we in N. America got crappy 155 hp 3.8s as stock, the rest of the world got 204 HP in theirs, with different bore and stroke, too. That's why they redline at 6,000 and not 5,500 (like our 3.8s do).

all stock 3.8 litre mercedes engines have the same bore and stroke,, 88.0 x78.9 no matter what country they are going to.
A 1980 Car and Driver preview article on the 380SEL stated that the Euros had different bore and stroke.
