Hi. The one from griotsgarage uses adhesive to mount it. I guess you could modify it to screw in. I'm just not crazy about putting screws through the leather and door panel.

How do these door mounted holders do on the Slam Test? Any spillage?

Any other ideas? Any way to hang one on the side of the center console near the seat heater switches? This might be in the way of the lower leg. There's room for one right in front of the locking console box, between that and the window switches. Any ideas for getting one there? (Passanger can hold their own drink.)

Here's yet another question: Are there replacement rear seat arm rests that have cup holders that pop out of them like on many "modern" cars?

The one from Griot's Garage comes with four screws. I don't remember if it came with adhesive tape or not.

Yeah, it's a bummer to put four holes in your door panel, but I see it as a permanent solution.

The cupholder has a spring loaded plastic piece that adjusts to the size of the container, and holds it in real tight.

Even if the door is slammed shut, the container stays in the cup holder, and nothing spills out.

mine came with double sided adhesive - the suggested miata application calls for one screw with the tape. i found that it wasn't enough and i had to use 4 screws.

about the slam test, i doubt any cupholder could survive that mounted to the door. i grab the drink as i'm getting out, and slam the door no problem!

i seem to recall having seen a double back-to-back cupholder that goes on the armrest. it might have been at the dealership...

In any event, the only way I'd feel comfortable mounting it is with four screws, and there are four indentations at each corner as a guide for the screws.

Mounted this way, it is incredibly solid, even with a full liter bottle of water.

Thumbs up

I just got shanta's cupholders. Very impressive! It's certainly overkill, but so's just about everything else on a 123

I think these will serve well

suginami: what do you screw into on the door panel...sheet metal? Did you pre-drill a pilot hole? Is there a risk of hitting some wiring back there....?

There is a wood backing behind the leather. It is really a pressed fiber board. I just used the screws provided. They are self-tapping so there is no need to drill. I thought mine came with four screws. A post before mine says it only came with one. If it just comes with one screw, then go to your local hardware store and get three extra screws. The screws are not very long, preventing you from going through the wood and interfering with wires or the power window mechanism. FWIW, I had originally purchased the other cupholder from the dealer (which I eventually returned) and noticed that the screws that it came with were the same length the one from Griot's Garage came with.

In fact, I recommend not to drill. I thought I'd drill a pilot hole for the first screw to make a clean installation, and the leather got sucked around the drill bit and made a helluva mess. I had to unwind the leather from the drill bit and smooth out the leather to make it look normal.

Gottcha, thanks! One last question, is the black color of the cupholder a good match to the dashboard and other interior black trim for color?

I spent $6 on a cupholder for my W124. Went to Kragen, bought a generic cupholder that ratchets to fit most drinks. It fits into the center console PERFECTLY, and very tightly, no screws needed. And it works well too.

CUP HOLDERS

By some odd coincidence, I stumbled across this thread a few hours after purchasing one of the $39.95 door-mounted cup holders for my '92 300E. I had had one on a previous W124 sedan, and had never seen anything better, so bought another. When I saw the pics of the one from Griot's Garage, I immediately ordered one! I hope it is as satisfactory as people here say. Now the question is whether to try to return the one to the dealer, or just use one of each.
And if anyone wants a used but serviceable BLACK deler cupholder (removed from my late 1992 300D), give a whistle.

It's a perfect match. Check out the pictures I posted on the link on page 1.
