2nd greatest heavyweight ever
We all know that Ali was the greatest. This is a poll for the second greatest. I was watching some footage of Rocky Marciano the other day. Pound for pound I think he's the greatest ever.

I am glad we agree on the greatest... and he even told us he was going to be the greatest when he first started... have to give him even more points for that....

i think for sure it would J Louis....thats what all the commetators always say
Louis was the best pound for pound fighter ever today i think that distinction would have to go to Roy Jones Jr today |

i think most people saw films of Joe Louis fights when he was way past his prime. his moves were so clean and blindingly fast specially for a heavyweight!

Ali's hands were so fast that they called the punch that put Liston down " the phantom punch" ... Movie camera's taking 24 frames per second ... some of them missed it....

i watched slowmo replays of the phantom punch and i slowed it down even more until i saw it. i really have my doubts about what happened there. some people claim liston took a dive...

I saw Sonny Liston jump rope on the Ed Sullivan show... now you might think we as a nation were starved for entertainment or easily pleased.. but that was a riveting 'performance'.... Power and Coordination and some fancy rope work... it was mesmerizing....you couldn't take your eyes off the movement put to the music " Nighttrain".....

JSmith, If he had not gone on to win so many fights that might still be a question.. but I am convinced from what I heard Bob Costas say about it...I also happended to see it on big screen when it happened... I was a teenager and played sports but was not a jock... out of the blue my parents suggested I go see it 'live' ... it was at the Paramount theater downtown Austin...it cost $17 .. which was a LOT to me in those days... still have not figured out their suggestion... they must have been wanting a night to themselves....LOL.... Imagine my surprise when it was over SO FAST...

i know what you mean. i watched it on TV as it was broadcast and boy was i confused! on cable, they have shown pretty good boxing documentaries and i have a TIVO which is a real godsend for that sort of thing. i can slow everything down to "frame by frame". that's how i was able to analyze the second Clay-Liston fight recently to my own satisfaction. don't get me wrong, i really like Ali too! i have the "When We Were Kings" DVD and i love watching it over and over - specially the knockout sequence...

Was the phantom punch in the first or second Liston/Clay/Ali fight? I had forgotten there were more than one...

I generally agree with your ranking. I am glad you included Larry Holmes up there. I think when you talk about all time top five he has to be mentioned. Champ for seven years and never ducked anybody. I think people forget how good he was in his prime because he wasn't as popular a person as Ali.
As for Ali's phantom punch, I think he really had some sneaky power in his right that he isn't given enough credit for. It could have been a legitimate, quick punch on the button. |

I have not been implying that I thought it was not a legit punch or that it was not the cause of Liston going down... I was just saying many people questioned it at the time because it was so fast that they could not see it if they blinked at the wrong time..
