Etiquette @ The State Of The Union
It seemed as though some people were down right rude.
Should the military brass have gotten up with the rest of the audience (it seemed they were glued to their seats save one or two times)? Was the seating by party Demos on one side and the Repubs on the other. (Distinct lack of applause and standing on one side of the aisle) I personally hate it when the news geeks/spinners etc refer to the sitting President as Mr. rather than his current title. And then they will refer to an x as Pres in the same breath!! Just my 1/2 cent!

civility
One thing I have noticed in our society is the lack of civility over the years. When you look at the products of Hollywood, sports stars, and the obsessive drive to be constantly entertained, it is no wonder. Ever been passed on the highway and flipped the bird ? I have, and I wonder if the jerk was in a hurry to get home and turn on the TV !
Ever wonder why we are an increasingly obese nation ? Doesn't take rocket science to figure it out. Too much of the wrong kinds of food, and too little exercise. What are people doing while eating junk food and not exercising ? Right, watching TV, playing video games, laying around. I'm not bragging, but I have 9% bodyfat. I am not a natural ! I work my butt off doing aerobics, martial arts, and weight lifting, and I follow a strict nutrition program. Don't have time ? People make time to do what they really desire ! A fact ! How can we get civility back ? It will never happen ! It would require a total overhall of the public school system. I am a public school teacher and will powerfully say that the system is shot ! Look at any high school literature book and you will see that most of the classics of Western Civilization are gone; replaced with rubbish and nonsense ! These classics, one time in our country taught civility, respect, and decency. They are dying ! I hate to think of some of the students I am teaching one day hitting the streets as adults. It is too scary to think about. Robert Davis

In defense of the Military
It is not appropriate to applaud for ones self. Generally, the military "Brass" were only on camera while reference was being made to the military, which they were present to represent. So they did not applaud when the military were the object of applause; to have done so would be seen as bragging / applauding for themselves.
Also, senior officers are prohibited from indicating political preferences in public. So cheering for what might be construed as a partisan point is a BIG no-no. I believe you would see they applauded / stood when it was appropriate for them to do so. As for Hillary, remember her similar performance last year?

First off, every word Bush said last night was not worhty of a standing ovation like the republicans felt they should. Second, if someone does not feel what is being said is good, let alone excellent, applause is not mandated. Why is it everyone feels that if everyone else is clapping, they have to as well? I applaud the Democrats that remained in their seats. If you do not agree with something, why praise it?

rudeness at speech
Heck, I had the speech going through my surround system and hear two cell phones ring during the president's speech

I didn't get to see the speech on TV due to the time zone thing, but I wanted to know if Dick Cheney did his trick of drinking a glass of water while "W" was talking?

The State of the Union speech in general has become very rude in recent years. It seems that just as TV has changed from offering “drama” into offering “trauma” the politicians have changed from stately to bitter and harshly partisan. Unfortunately, their behavior does pretty well represent the “State of the Union.”
Also, say what you will about Hillary Clinton but she has worked hard and achieved more than most ever will. But I agree, this doesn’t excuse her from her disrespectful demeanor. |

I saw Kennedy on Brokaw and there was no doubt in my mind that he was three sheets to the wind. It was an unbelievable display. Here's a guy that is railing on about Bush when he shoud just now be getting out on parole for his drive off the bridge.
