I am looking at a 1990 300e 4matic .The car seems very good, with the only snag being shudder coming from the rear differential. VERY slight under normal moderate acceleration, heavy under heavy acceleration. also, when tight turning, the rear wheels seem to be locked together. I have seen this in other 4 matic, and would like to know if this makes the car not worth looking at for purchase. Thanks--Im new at this

The W124 4matics are troublesome cars. Look for something else.

Want a reliable German AWD car from the late 80's and early 90's that has an inline-6, and usually is found with, get this, a 5-speed manual?

My Mercedes mechanic stated "4matics are problematic".

Intrested in getting a 4matic MB since I have to deal with the snow when the season is here, my current e class rear wheel drive tranny really sucks big time in the snow and in the rain. I hear there are alot of problems with the 4matic, what are the problems with the 4matic tranny, from common to rare.

Good subject, but shouldn't it be posted somewhere else? It may get more play in Tech help.

the single most important issue with the early 4 matics is drivetrain maintenance.if the 4 matic hardware has been maintained properly you should have a positive experience.ive taken good care of mine and im into the 5th year of ownership.horror stories abound on this list but few of these come from actual previous owners.there is a lot of disinformation out there.send me a pm if you need more info

The later 4matic does not resemble the early system at all. It is completely re-engineered and is not known for problems.

Having asked about this four years ago, I am sure he's resolved the question by now
