Victor5 5555

I've watched a number of older movies in which telephone numbers are given in partial name form such as Victor5 5555.
It was explained to me that in the old days everyone understood that you dialed the first two letters of the name(the exchange) followed by the other 5 numbers.

Other exchanges I've heard in the movies are Madison, Murray Hill, Chestnut and Kelly. Evidentally some exchanges were more exclusive than others. I've also heard that in the old days you could tell where a person lived just by the first three numbers of the telephone number.

Does anyone know of any other name exchanges and when telephone numbers stopped being given this way.
