Victor5 5555
I've watched a number of older movies in which telephone numbers are given in partial name form such as Victor5 5555.
It was explained to me that in the old days everyone understood that you dialed the first two letters of the name(the exchange) followed by the other 5 numbers. Other exchanges I've heard in the movies are Madison, Murray Hill, Chestnut and Kelly. Evidentally some exchanges were more exclusive than others. I've also heard that in the old days you could tell where a person lived just by the first three numbers of the telephone number. Does anyone know of any other name exchanges and when telephone numbers stopped being given this way. Last edited by jamesnj; 04-08-2003 at 04:34 AM. |

I remember our phone number in LA when I was a kid started with EM-something-something. Stood for "EMpire". I guess it was the precurser to area codes. Kind of went away sometime in the mid or late sixties.
Want a real laugh, check out this old phone directory from a small town in Minnesota where my grandparents were from: http://www.rootsweb.com/~mnaitkin/palisade.htm It doesn't have a date, but I'm guessing it's from about the 1930's or 40's at the latest.
