w126 transmissions

Hello all,

Can anyone give me some general info on 126 transmissions especially mine (1983)? Are these trannys electronically controlled in anyway? Mine has been slipping for years now and so far besides that its going ok. Anything else to watch out for?

If it slips between 1st and 2nd, that's pretty easy to fix. A shift modulator will take care of it. If it's slips between 2nd and 3rd, you might have someone check the B2 piston. 126 trannys of your vintage had a problem with that.

If it gives out, the MB rebuild mentioned above is a good alternative. My suggestion is only let a MB dealer or a shop that REALLY knows theese trannys.

Good luck

it slips when shifting from 1st to 2nd then when it gets to third it right away slips out and goes to fourth unless the shifter is in 3. When you floor it though, it wont slip through any gears.

Temperature especially hot days, makes the tranny work perfectly thorugh the gears but in winter it never works like should.

yup, thats what im doin spock. This car has been great to me since my dad handed it down to me. He says its been actually getting better than it was before in terms of how smooth its running and the reliability. I take care of it soo much though and worry alot about little things that people criticize me but I dont care.....in one ear....out the other.

It is also an amazing car for summer. It has the largest sunroof ive ever seen on a car and is nice when open and the windows all down. Ive upgraded the stereo and speakers so it has a nice rich sound to it now and really impresses people. The car could have better gas mileage but for what ive seen out there its ok. I would like to take it to florida on a trip......I live in Toronto Canada and from here down to there its about 2days......(24hrs if you stop for gas and quickly eat on the go and no sleep)

But I dont know if the car would make it....probably would but I would be too worried.

Needs A Cleaning

Put some BG transmission cleaner in it and make sure you follow the directions, ie how long to run it. Drain and fill the ATF. Make adjustments, see Thomaspin's site for transmission tuning. It could have lots of varnish inside the shift body. You could also use synthetic ATF such as AMSOIL.

yup....my mechanic mentioned this last summer when he was repairing something. It costs about $1500 to rebuild it but at this point he said, to just drive it cause it aint bad enough and they pretty much all do it.

what should my driving be like when driving a car with these tranny problems? I rarely push the car....once in a while but not all the time.
