When I had a convertible, I would remove the face plate and then proceed to put it in it's case and stick it underneath my seat because it was a pain to carry with me everywhere.

I only remove it in certain areas where I would go. To me, removing it all the time seems to loosen the faceplate when its attached cause of wear and tear....this happened with my previous stereo and now with my new MP3 unit I barely remove the face.
I think my tinted windows help also.
