Alright ... lets shift the topic ever-so-slightly.
What do YOU prefer to say, when referening to a car's power source? Motor? Engine? I tend to say motor ... it sounds more classy to me. Similarly, I say "record" instead of CD or Tape. |

Okay ... what about ....
Why is it when people describe a video recording (movie, documentary, whatever) they say Video or DVD. Isn't a DVD a video? Why can't they say VHS (or Beta ) or DVD? It makes me feel that advertisers think the public is stupid ... what, we can't tell the difference between a tape or a DVD ... hello, they are both in videos, just in different formats. One is a tape, the other is a DVD.
And what about the term Latin? Latin music ... latino ... latin food, etc. Don't they mean Latin American? I, being of Italian heritage (all GPs are from the Old Country) have more "Latin" in my blood than most, if not all Hispanics. Latins came from Litium ... which is modern day Rome. I guess it is our Lexicon once again ...

Cazzzidy,
It depends. If the power comes from a device that burns fuel and oxygen, creates heat and turns it into mechanical energy its an engine. If it runs on power from batteries in the form af electrical energy, its a motor. Originally in the late 1800s, most of the cars were powered by batteries and motors, thus the name motor cars. We may again get to back to cars powered by motors when they get efficient fuel cells. Hybrid cars use both engines and motors. P E H |

Off topic.... Norman, I agree with you too. Nothing irritates me more than watching the start of a movie's preview that says "now available on video and DVD". I should be "now available on VHS and DVD". Of course, than you will have some idiot at Blockbuster asking "what's a VHS??? Do you have it on VIDEO???"

Piotr,
All the jet skis I've seen were powered by an engine: burned a fuel by use of oxygen from the air. Maglev is powered my magnetic linear motors that use electricity as their energy source. P E H |

OK, smart.. err.. PEH. How about matter-antimatter vehicle? or, for that matter, nuclear pile? exploding H-bombs creating thrust? (I'll think of more later)
