Does anyone know how they'll smog check a Prius or Insight in California? None are 5 years old so first owners don't have to deal with it. It might be required in a private transfer but from the lack of availability of used cars, this isn't a common issue.

But I'm still curious. Oviously there's no idle test because the engine isn't on while idling unless the AC is on or the batteries are low. Maybe there's a test mode? I don't know the specifics of the roller test but I believe it requires a fairly constant engine rpm. The gasoline engine might cut in and out during the test.

Anyone know?

I was under the impression that they were exempt from smog testing, at least in Colorado. I may be misguided.

Not misguided. I just checked the Colorado Clean Air page. Both are exempt.
