Why be "open-minded" to something that is WRONG?

Whatever...

I'm one of the most open-minded people you will ever know (or at least e-know) when it comes to many, many things...unless I know someone or something is wrong.

Being open-minded to what you know to be wrong is NOT open-minded. It's stupid.

Mike -- the only thing that many of us seem to be communicating to you is that the two events you've described don't bear the comparison you're making. This is apples and oranges. You see these two events as similar, and I don't. I understand your attitude toward Rush, and agree with you to a point, but I don't see the analogy between these two disparate events.

BTW, remember Jimmy the Greek? Not a political figure at all, but that incident might provide a better analogy...

Its an interesting question, when to stay with being, "right" and when to compromise?

Or stated another way, when is "flexible compromise", not a virtue?

For example, lets say that I think pedophilia is evil, but that 16 yr old next door is mighty sweet. Does it matter whetehr I'm 16 yrs old or 61 yrs old? How about if she's 13 of 17 and I'm 13 or 18? Just what is pedophilia and at what point is it reasonable to compromise? How about homosexuality? Drug use? Being a Republican?

I agree with Mikemover in principle, but its really difficult to live by absolutes in real life.

They are not disparate events...they were public statements, made by two public figures...One seen as "racist" because of his social and political standing, one not seen as "racist" because of his social and political standing.

Jimmy the Greek was not in the wrong either. His observation was historically accurate. Was this historic fact the result of an unfortunate, terrible period of our history? Yes. Is it inherently racist to refer to this history? No.

Why polarize a simple situation? I bet the player is an American just like most of us. This is the '03's and we are usually considered the same in public. I get called all sorts of names, but it never gets into the news. Poor me.

True, but I strive to not allow my principles and convictions to be "adjustable" for convenience sake.

"Polarizing" is not the point.

I've been called names, and could care less most of the time. But I have BIG problems with one person calling someone a "name" , and it's OK, while another person can call the same person the SAME "name", and it's not OK. To them I say: Make up your mind. Are you insulted or not? Don't adjust your tolerance for insults or offensiveness to suit political or social whims or agendas.

I think that it absolutely matters, and that is the issue here. In this case, Junior is the 16yo and Rush is the 61yo. Rush is an experienced public speaker who was speaking in a very public forum. Junior was engaging in some locker room banter with his buddies. It's like comparing the political philosophies of Henry Kissinger with those of Mike Tyson. One you take seriously -- the other you don't.

Good analogy! Got the logic and some wonderfully extreme examples. I'm sold.

I guess I failed to generalize properly. What I was trying to get at was a lawyerly argument (shouldda stayed with botany, huh?). My attempted point was that often what seems like a good, rigid rule is easily swayed by perceptions.
