what is that bright-a$$ star low in the S sky? (not mars)

anyone know what the BRIGHT-A$$ flickering star low in the southern sky is? not mars, it is still very vis higher and further west.

thought you might enjoy these pics i found linked in a astro site:
taken during Kilmanjaro (sp?) trip. the centered axis dot is the "southern" star. the light trails around the tents are flashlights. as i had to downsize them, they are not nearly as good as the origionals.

BIG time reminder that we are just a big spinning ball in the comos!
