Downloading music

I want to download music from the internet so that I can rip my own CD's. I heard that the I Tunes from Apple for 99 cents a song was a good source or the new Napster also for 99 cents/song or $9, 90 a month per album.

Any recommendations/experiences from the forum as to a good place to get music?

And I understand we have to pay now to download

Thanks for the help

I can vouch for itunes.

They have almost everything. The downloads are fast and of high quality.

Whats more, they let you here a 5 second clip of any song.

A lab member has used iTunes quite a bit. She really likes it, but says that the selection still needs to grow a little.

I've not used it, nor have I bought any CDs in the last year or so; it's unethical to support the RIAA, imho. Don't worry, I don't do illegal downloading either...

Watch out for proprietary music file formats. In such a case you have limited ability to play the music on other devices or rip a CD.

MP3 is the one that everyone can share and can play on "generic" devices.

The new Napster and iTunes use a proprietary format. You cannot play their music on your MP3 player. For a PC, you have to download their proprietary player. For a portable player, you have to buy their device. Such as an iPod.

That's my impression anyway - I'm not going to participate in any such proprietary deal and so I'm not fully informed as to their specific format.

Thanks Ken,

This music stuff is confusing me I guess that window of opportunity when the downloading of music was free and free of hassles is history.

Anyways last night I decided to experiment a bit and I got the I Tunes from Apple, the downloading and use of the software was ridiculous simple, for 99 cents a melody, that is. I went sort of crazy got quite an eclectic mix of sounds 27 of them to be exact which it came out to be $ 19.00 plus $1.00 for Tax I thought there were not tax in the internet? Still I was able to rip a couple of CD's which so far I have been able to play in my home stereo and in my car, :p . I will keep my fingers cross since one of the reasons I want to rip and download is because I just order a new CD changer (Alpine 634) for my Mercedes E-320 and which it should be able to play most common formats including MP3's.

Keep the peace and let us hope that the boys come home I believe we have achieved our objectives, in whatever place we are over there.

Exactly. iTunes music format can only be played on an iPod or any HP device. They announce recently that they will be using iPod's standard.

300 SDL,

I will politely disagree, if you can go to the I Tunes Preference page you will see that there are a number of formats as options for importing music and burning CD's including the MP3 so as far as I tune is concerned the MP3 format is not an issue. Like I said last night I rip two CD's using I Tunes both of them I can play at my home stereo, and in my Volvo's CD player. I am waiting for a CD changer for my Mercedes so that I can play all the I Tune's music I have downloaded is an Alpine 634 that will be able to play all the common music formats including MP3's. From what I have been able to see the music from I tunes can be play universally in any music system provided you have specified the right format prior to the burning of the CD.

I think iTunes limits the number of daughter copies you can produce, but couldn't care less what format you copy into. Is it four copies?

Though I don't own an iPod, I think it has the format issue--it will only accept MP4's. Not sure about that.

Botnst,

I believe you are right the issue is not which format but the number of copies and shares from one devise to another. I tried to read every detail of the agreement before my purchase of the I Tunes but I 'm sure I missed some things. The point though is that you can play the downloaded music in just about any devise with out too much trouble.

Support the RIAA? Who cares about the RIAA?.....What about supporting the MUSICIANS whose music you listen to and enjoy?!

iTunes was Mac-only when they first launched it, but now you can download in PC format as well....Compatability is no longer an issue. An mp3 is an mp3....It will play on any device that plays mp3s.
