Lightbulb How long are flourescent replacement bulbs supposed to last?

Hello!

When the light by my computer died a month or so ago, I decided to try one of those flourescent replacement bulbs in place of the 60 watt incandescent bulb. The bulb worked perfectly...until today.

I use this light fairly often, but I can still get 3 or 4 months of use out of an incandescent bulb. I thought that one of the appeals of flourescent bulbs was that they're supposed to last longer. Is this correct? If so, did I get a bad bulb, or do these replacement-type bulbs not have the longevity that they claim to have?

If this bulb died prematurely, is there any chance of recourse? The name on the bottom is "Lights of America".

Any thoughts? Thanks!

The florescent replacements for incandescent bulbs are advertised as having a 7 year life span for most brands. Where did you buy the bulb? I would ensure the lamp works by testing with a known good bulb, if the lamp works I would retrun the bulb to the place of purchase. Hopefully you have the receipt and if you don't hopefully they'll replace it anyways. I have converted most of the lighting at home in California to florescent and have several bulbs that have been running for over 4 years.

I have them everywhere some have lasted 5 years and some have died in a year. You get great output for the buck, personally I don't care about the up front cost I'd rather boost my Home Depot stock over our monopolistic scalping power company.

The lamp works just fine; I found an incandescent bulb and actualy have it on right now.

I got the flourescent light at OSH, and while I don't have the receipt, they're typically pretty good about returns. I'll give it a shot... *fingers crossed*

LOA bulbs are known to be one of the more flaky CF's. I have a few of them around the house, and knock on wood, they're still going fine after two years - although one is getting a bit slow to come on. That bulb however, is hung upside down in a completely enclosed housing, two distinct situations cautioned against on the package.

My recommendation would be to buy a brand other than a LOA bulb for its replacement.

Carter, shortly after election, returned to Plains and opined, "Its good to be back in Plains, GA where people don't have accents."

Whatever you think of his politics, you gotta love that line.

I see...wish I had known that at the time. C'est la vie, eh?

I'll see if I can get it exchanged; if not, I'll be sure that the replacement bulb isn't an LOA bulb.

Thanks!

GE says life on these bulbs is shortened if less than 15

My Father-in-law has been using these with some success.
Recently, one failed within a few months, yet again. So, he called the manufacturer, in this case GE.

The GE rep said on the phone that if you're using these bulbs in situations where they're on for less then 15 minutes, it significantly shortens the life of the ballast in the bulb, adding that for less than 15 min. usage, the regular bulbs are much more reliable.

I wonder if anyone in California ever did any research on that.
Did they ever pass that law making the florescent bulbs mandatory in CA?

that rings true.

better to leave them on.

if turning them on and off all the time better to use incandescent.
