Annoying problem with Window XP, do you have it also?
I have been having this problem with Windows XP from about when I first loaded it my computer. When I'm on the internet and I switch from one window to another, the windows freeze up for a few seconds, it,s annoying as heck. I happens with as few as only two windows open. It'll happen when switching from ms explorer to ms outlook express or explorer to explorer or whatever other program. Anyone else experience this problem?

I get it some with my computer at home. It has 128K RAM vs 256K here at work. I'm thinking it's just memory-hungry.

Sp0ck - I scan for viruses on a regular basis and my virus program is up to date as well.
Rickg - I have a whole GiG of RAM, so no memory problems I guess. My computer is a "Frankenstein" model that I built over a year ago with some help from a friend of mine. It might just be a glitch in the OS. Let's see what else comes up from other members. It could be that I might have to defrag the hard drives.

Have you checked your system process menu to see what memory and CPU you have available?
Also what interval do you have outlook express set at for checking mail. If it's set for evry minute or 2 you're going to have problems. BTW use Mozilla. |

I just completed a complete defrag and one thing so far I have noticed it loads programs much faster. I'm going to try switching between windows a bunch of times to see what happens now. MedMech - I manually check my email. I have Mozilla but when I loaded it it found an old version of Netscape that I used to use and it looks like its using it for its program.

It just switched a bunch of times between my windows quickly and it didn't hang a single time. It looked like the defrag might have helped. I'll just have to wait and see if it won't hang again.

what I think?
Windows in general is an annoying problem. I constantly have some sort of glitch, freeze or error. I download all of the new patches and updates and generally maintain my computer (hp pavillion). I think my next computer's going to be a Mac. Are there any Mac users who are dissatisfied with their computers reliability and performance?

Firewalls can be built on windows or mac os. Straight out of the box, though, I'd have to believe that macs are less insecure; we've had all our windows machines cracked into, and the macs just kept ticking along. I'm pretty sure that mac os x can be cracked, though.

Thanks, Spock. We were aware of the open ports (i'd been doing "netstat" stuff since 1997 or so, although not always on a windows computer), but some geniuses kept disabling the Zone Alarm stuff. Even at that, all the holes in Internet Exploder and Outlook Express allowed other junk in.
This is only, only my opinion, but even today I'll take Mac OS X over win xp without hesitation. I simply do not trust the basic structure of windows, especially since port status is only part of the picture. |

The primary reason that Macs haven't been a target of virus/worm/trojan/hackers is that there are proportionately so few of them. I think somewhere aroun 5% of internet computers are Macs. The creeps who release the malevolent programs and so forth want to make a big splash. Hard to make a big splash with 5% of the 'puters.
OS-X is a UNIX shell. It comes with everything pretty well shut down except peripherals and during set-up you go through configurations decisions that establish firewall security. But I believe it should be about as vulnerable as any other Unix machine. At home I have a pswd protected router and both networked Macs are pswd protected. Also, I get far fewer spyware installations on my home Macs than my office PC's. Probably the same reason. Mac OS-X gives you a great shell that is very similar to the Mac OS-9 interface. But OS-X is a shell. You can get into the inner horror of Unix if that floats your boat. Its several obscure windows away and then you're in command-line heaven. I succesfully run the oOpen Source clone of Microsoft "Office" and find it reliable. It runs a bit slower than "Office", probably because I have an older G-3 which is about 3 generations behind top-shef Macs, and an even older PowerMac 6300 (1995). The older Mac runs OS-9, the last true Mac OS. The machines are running through the same router without a hitch. The 6300 is just barely tolerable for internet. It's bus speed is way slower than my cable connection so images take a while to load and streaming vid, fahgettaboutit! But it's a very reliable old thing and runs plenty of kid's games and wordprocessor and such. Someday I'm gonna buy a bleeding edge computer just to see what its like. B |

I have WinXP at home, and have had no problems what so ever with it. 512 DDR RAM 2.19GHz processor 120MB HDD
I've had it about a year now, and have no complaints at all. I do have it set to inform me of updates...might want to check if there are some that you missed. (you never know) Good luck! -Larry

I probably should check for updates but they have so many bulletins, i'ts hard to know for sure which ones I need.
Anyway, after I did the total defrag of my hard drives, my computer has been running smoothly ever since.
