My first car was a bright red-orange '74 Bug...does that count?

The car lasted 2 whole months before blowing a piston and leaving my on the side of the I-5 for 2 days...

It was fun while it lasted, but I didn't have the $$ to fix the engine or put another block in, so I sold it for $200...

It'd be fun to have another one (or, better yet, a bus) someday to tinker with

I grew up on Vee Dubs

Myu first car was a '65 bug I got for free at the age of 15. The car belonged to the widow of a friend of my uncle's. It sat for three years and was covered in primer painted with a house brush! I spent my entire summer stripping the paint and learning to do the body work. My uncle loaned me this spray gun that uses low pressure hot air and I wound up painting the car in the drive way!
It actually looked OK.
I bought an adjustable front end at the swap meet and lowered the rear for the perfect Cal Look stance. I saved my money and dropped in a 1776cc motor with a warm cam and dual webers. Even though the motor was small it could still scream! I later sold the bug, I got tired of the bump-steer and wanted a car that I could transport my drumset in. I bought a '72 bus, even more gutless than my 300sd! The most fun thing to do in the bus was to pull the front tires up to a steep speed bump, getting as many of your friends in the very back area above the engine as possible, and just dumping the clutch and hammering the gas, and pulling a slight wheelie!

good times!

Just sold my '71 superbeetle project. Actually, gave away would be better termed.
I used to be heavy into squarebacks in the 80's. Could pick them up real cheap back then. No one wanted them. I had 7 or 8 all at once at one time. (Just hauled the last 2 off to scrap a few weeks ago) Now I see the darn things fetching a grand or two!

My first car...a 73 Super Beetle...

...see my sig...still have it.

Joined the Gateway VW club when I lived in St. Louis...became president the year after.

Turned it into a show vehicle in 86. Got tons of trophies for it up until 97...marriage and family left little time for such an intense hobby, so I stopped after that.

Car just sits and decays now. Daughter is getting older and has shown interest in restoring it in time for her 16th birthday...wife is against it (of course).

This is one of two digital pics I have, taken in 2002:

...and the motor...a 1641cc w/dual 34 Webers:

While the thread is alive I'll post this:

I have a tow bar kit for these vintage beetles I've had since the late 70's. It has been used a few times, is in great shape and is in the original box.

It hooks under the front tortion bar and makes the beetle towable in an instant.

It does NOT fit the "Super Beetle"

If interested, send me a Private message and we will negotiate...

Thanks

Borrowed a friends '70 Beetle for a couple weeks . . . that gearshift was the definition of the word "vague" compared to the MG's and Triumphs that we had. Seemed like the gear linkage was made of pure gum rubber!

On another tangent, a newly hired attendant at a local service station here in 1973 was so proud when, back in the days of full service, he remembered to put water in the radiator in the front of a Beetle that pulled in . . . had to call that customer up real quick!

62 Bus. Was it 36 hp of sheer power? Drove through TX, Mexico, NM, AZ, CO, OK and back one summer. I think in 1974. Whadda ride.

That is funny about the increased mileage with a better breathing intake system. A buddy and I drove his '70 single cab type-II from Olympia WA, down to San Francisco back in the late '80's. He had a 1776cc engine with a dual dual-throat Dellorto carb setup--that was a very torquey little engine. We were loaded down with two BMW motorcycles (R65LS & R100/7), a drum set, a bicycle, and all his clothes and personal effects. We ended up getting 30 mpg for most of that trip. I don't think my stock VW vans ever got more than about 27 mpg, and that was on very rare occasions at that.
