Who was your favorite loser?
What losing presidential candidate would you most liked to have won the presidency in your lifetime? Popular candidates such as John Anderson, John McCain, Ross Perot, Howard Baker, Jerry Brown, Jesse Jackson, Eugene McCarthy, etc. Who did you like? My choice would have to be Bob Dole. I enjoyed his wit, and found him extremely intelligent and qualified for the job.

I was always dissapointed Spiro Agnew didn't win. Was too young to know anything about him at the time, but loved his name I remember the jokes on the radio about the Spiro Bird. Guess that was in reference to Mrs. Johnson always being called Lady Byrd.

Although I was too young to personally remember the campaigns, one of my professors in college was part of Adlai Stevenson's national campaign. As a result, I had access to a lot of the speeches, position papers and other materials. He was a bazillion times more qualified than Ike, but he just wasn't the former Supreme Commander of the Allied Forces.

McCain, I really liked him and thought what the party did to him in the primaries was a disgrace. I changed my party affiliation from Rep to Dem in a meaningless token protest.
John Anderson is (was?) a nice guy. Used to speak with him semi occasionally at school. Never about politics though. |

No questions, more people "Liked Ike" as Mamie knew oh so well. Both Ike and Adlai held dim views of Nixon, so maybe there was common ground.

Dan Gurney, Car & Driver's candidate in the late 60's if memory serves correctly. I was too young to vote.

Mc Cain and then Bob Dole.
Bob Dole would've won had he shown some of his personality in the campaign rather than afterward. Mc Cain IMO is money. |

Try a decent individual with an excellent education, a nuclear engineer, perhaps. Also make him a succesful farmer and businessman. Give him a strong record of accomplishment as governor of a fractious, mid-sized state. The perfect president? Jimmy Carter. Or a hat salesman in tight with a politically and criminally corrupt machine in another mid-sized state. With no record of accomplishment. Bad choice? Harry Truman. Son of a patrician family steeped in public service. Excellent eduation. Acknowledged ourage in combat. Kerry, Kennedy (some), Bush (some). Or a rich, sickly son of a rich family given everything he wanted for the asking. A brilliant weakling as a kid who worked himself to physical fitness and courage. Teddy Roosevelt. Son of a broken home with drunkard, indolent dad. Modest education. An actor. Reagan. A brilliant, gifted student, presecutor and governor. Clinton. If you can see a common thread of qualifications that point to succesful presidency, I'd love to have it pointed out. |
