What watch can I buy my wife?
Many quality watches for women have no hour/minute markings apart from the basic 12 - 3 - 6 - 9 notches.
Her current cheapo watch is a $300 Rado lookalike (not a copy, but I've forgotten the brand), and she has great difficulty reading it. So what quality timepiece can I buy my 50-something SLK driver that will allow her to tell the time? I have an Omega, but I think she wants something small and stylish - which they are not. Ken Silver -------------- ~1993 SL500, glistening triple black, xenons: http://www.kensilver.com/SL ~1999 SLK 230 Kompressor, silver /black, CD, immaculate (my wife's) ~1991 Daimler, shiny grey / grey leather, best in country! ~ex 350SL, 230E, 280E, MX5 and a lot of other makes not nearly as nice.

You asked. Here's my answer. Never heard of anybody not being able to read the time on a Rolex. My wife rotates between several Rolexes, some she bought, some I bought. She wouldn't dream of wearing anything else.

Omega has small models, or check out Cyma like Narwhal's wife wears.

So far I've got:
- Timex - Rolex - Cyma Two end with "ex" and that doesn't sound good for our long-term marriage. The other sounds like a cyborg brain implant mechanism. So, how are we doing? Anyone going to tell me what their wives wear? I caught my wife looking at an Omega Constellation the other day. She's never looked at watches before so I figure this must be a good thing. They're available in men's and women's sizes. Around $1400, not cheap, not too expensive.

I looked through some of the ladies watches at the Omega site, and they're really some nice ones there, but it seems like what Ken is after is a more "readable" face or dial. The Omega's, although very nice looking, are very high quality, but not extraordinarily "readable" when you start getting into the ladies watches. My Speedy Pro is probably the most readable watch in existence, but would Ken's wife want to wear it? It's a MONSTER on a ladies wrist ('course it could be worse, ie a Railmaster). The Speedy ladies are all "jewelry" watches, and you could even I suppose entertain a Speedy Reduced, but even the Reduced isn't nearly as readable as the Professional.
You could look over the Anna Kournikova "Choices" selection at the Omega site (I'll see if I can find a link), or there are also smaller models Omega makes in the Seamaster line, but these aren't "pretty" watches for women, more like small sports watches. Ken, are you really looking for readablity in a smaller, ladies watch, or is a small womens "jewelery" watch what she wants? Gilly

Ok, here's a picture of Anna K and her watch "choices":
http://www.omega.ch/omega/co_ambassador_home?uid=AK You're not getting much readablity there, the only slight exception is the Reduced, which is a pretty pretty watch, here's a link to just that: http://www.omega.ch/omega/co_watch?ID=1317&line=117&gen=L&subline=377 But at any rate, even with the reduced, there isn't enough room on the dial for the 3, 6 and 9 o'clock numbers, really crowding the dial. The others are nice looking "jewelry" watches. Now here's Cindy Crawfords "Choices", the one she wears here is pretty legible, but NO numbers at all!: http://www.omega.ch/omega/wo_star_ambass_cindy_intro As far as REAL legibility in a ladies watch, I'd consider a ladies Seamaster 300M quartz, here's a link to that: http://www.omega.ch/omega/co_se_ladies_sub?sublineID=368&lineID=116&sexID=64 I think I like the black one better. Finally the ladies Speedmasters: http://www.omega.ch/omega/co_se_ladies_sub?sublineID=368&lineID=116&sexID=64 I don't like all the diamonds on it, not for an everyday watch. There are a few without diamonds, this one is probably the one I like, I like the black dials: http://www.omega.ch/omega/co_watch?ID=14024&line=117&gen=L&sublineID=377 Gilly

Gilly,
Thanks for the links. My wife likes the shape of her present watch, and there is an Omega with a similar style but it probably falls into the "looks good" category instead of "looks at." I snapped a quick picture now while she was reading, to give everyone an idea. Ken Silver |

I just don't think there is alot of inherent readability in a square-faced watch. I don't suppose you two have considered maybe a nice digital? Can't go wrong with readability there! Too bad they don't make a nice X33 Reduced!
One of "Anna's Choices" is kind of nice and keeps that same basic square shape she has now, and the bezel isn't crowded with gaudy diamonds, here's that one: http://www.omega.ch/omega/co_watch?ID=1132&line=115&gen=L&subline=353 But again no numbers on the face at all, at the bezel is quite wide and may scratch easily. What price range are you looking at? Is this a special present (b-day, anniversary?). Gilly

"OK, this Speedmaster Pro is just a little large for most ladies, but you could put it just a little higher above your wrist, like maybe just below your elbow like this......" That Seamaster 300M is a little more towards the sporty I guess you'd say, but I really like the looks of it. Has she looked at that at all? I'm guessing maybe too sporty for her, but ask her to look anyways. I think it's in the price range. I'm not sure if the other ones we are discussing would be in that range or not, maybe. By all means, if you are serious about an Omega, give me an email and I can get you in touch with a very good retailer (good discount and a real brick and mortar authorized Omega dealer, a real "no B.S." deal, it's where I bought my Speedy). Gilly PS One nice thing about the 300M is that you can get that on the steel bracelet, instead of the leather strap. Omega's bracelets are the best!
