I have just a short time before I go to work, but thanks all, and i will try some of these suggestions. It's back to "normalcy" now I'd say, but I agree I should try another virus scan, especially whatever MS has available, although I have auto-update. It seems AVG was on there awhile before anything started happening, I more suspect a virus or worm.
In regards to my main "original" complaint on this thread, that was easily cured by simply "dragging" the box to a larger size, When I hit "maximize" screen button, it would only last for that one viewing.
I really don't think I have too much to complain about with WinME either. I think I just pick up problems on the net and that's what goes wrong, other systems may suffer the same problem.
So would anyone disagree that the best plan now is to check MS updates, try running a disc scan and defrag again, and maybe running a few other tests like AVG, adaware, and CWShredder?
Everything works correctly that I can tell, the Easy Access button I complained about now is doing exactly what it's supposed to now (had to configure the setting back to what it was before myself) and the computer quickly shuts down and restarts (I'm one of these nervous guys who likes to shut it down completely when I'm not using it). And what about checking the registry, and also is "Hijack This" a useful tool? Was I possibly "hijacked" when this all happened?

Gilly

PS One thing else is I occasionally get "bulk mail" through my Yahoo mail. It is protected by Yahoo, it's always a file that if I try to open, says it has a virus and won't let me open it. Is there anything I can do to stop getting this crap, or is that just "life in the big city"? I delete it from my bulk mail right away.

Gilly (you're probably at work now), after all that, could you 1) switch to mozilla from internet explorer -- even some threads here point out the benefits of this; 2) download Spybot Search & Destroy to run alongside AdAware, etc; 3) get Zone Labs' ZoneAlarm personal (maneuver through their "pro" options when going to the site to download it) ?

Even though you're on a dialup connection (if I've read the posts correctly), you've almost certainly got people port-scanning your ISP's domain pretty much perpetually. It's just a matter of time before your system's scanned by the right people with the right pre-made exploit software. ZoneAlarm would really help you with this. www.zonelabs.com .

Spybot has found things that other spyware detectors didn't, vice versa. www.safer-networking.org .

Also, please go to www.grc.com and follow the Shields Up link on the main page, then go to the Shields Up link on the second page, and do all of the listed scans against your computer. There's lots of useful information all over Gibson's site too.

All that being stated, I sincerely hope that you wind up running Linux or FreeBSD within a year.

a 'hijacker' is a program that takes over your homepage, usually
a pay-per-click scam site.

i use Avg without problems now and zonealarm pro. i never
ever open e-mails with attachments unless i know who sent them
or they are in a picture format. they just get deleated.

outlook express has an ignore/block function triggered by a target
word in the subject line. i dont get many junk e-mails anymore.

i have dial-up and unplug when i am not watching. i do the Ms
updates on occasion, about the only time i leave the computer
connected when i'm away.

i'm using xp professional now. it is good but apparently not
very secure from attacks. xp home is the worst system i have
used, though Nt was the most user unfriendly and had crappy
graphics. Me is nice, more secure from attacks, which just might
be attackers have less intrest in it.

certain types of sites: free porno, hacker, get-rich-quick are
full of intrusions.

defraging only needs to be done on occasion. it equates to
cleaning up and reorganizing misplaced files in the filing cabinets
in the file rooms down on the file floor

I think it's finally fixed, AFTER reformatting the disc and of course not having anything to save any info or any knowledge on how to do that. Mainly just have to get my address book refilled on my OE, other than that no great loss.

OK, it shut down correctly once or twice after reformatting it. Then I reloaded the software for the digital camera I just bought for EBaying. Bigger'n'heck, won't shut down. I had already been experimenting with removing, reinstalling the software for that with spotty results.
What I ultimately did is downloaded new software from the camera manufacturers website. The camera came with version 3.3, which said it was "For Windows", and on the website they had a version 3.4, which specifically states, among other OS's "that worthless assed Windows ME". Oh wait, it didn't say "ME", it just said "that worthless assed Windows" and all us ME owners know what is implied.
Thanks for all the help, talk to ya in another 6 months

Gilly

Now I've got a virus, need advice. AVG says it can't heal it, I need to remove the entire infected object. I can get to the infected object (C:\_RESTORE\TEMP\A0011381.CPY) nut my puter won't let me delete it. It says "cannot delete A0011381 Access is denied. The source file may be in use".
The virus is called "Trojan Horse Dialler.8.BL"

Any thoughts"?
