Speaking of climate change, here's an example of a very granular look at trends in a small region: Mangrove expansion and contraction at a poleward range limit: climate extremes and land-ocean temperature gradients - Osland - 2016 - Ecology - Wiley Online Library

Yeah, I know, all you get is the abstract and you have to buy the whole article.

Essentially, the authors looked at high resolution maps derived from color infrared photography (CIR, 1 meter pixels resolution) from 1976 to 2011 looking for the relative change in distribution of salt marsh and mangrove. The hypothesis being that low temps inhibit the colonization and expansion of mangrove into salt marsh.

The authors compared air & sea temps with map dates and ranges of the relevant coverage types and found that there is indeed a correlative relationship -- fewer killing frosts have allowed expansion of mangroves into salt marsh.

Does this prove man-made global warming? NO. It does show a very strong correlation between reduced instances of low extreme temps over time and a concomitant expansion of tropical expansion northward.

This same study would benefit from similar studies along other temp gradients. If those studies were to confirm this study it would strengthen, not prove, that tropical habitat types are expanding into historically temperate climatic zones.

Some climate modeler will pick up this type of data and use it to calibrate climate models as related to changes in tropical vs temperate vegetation coverage correlated to temp extremes.

Ture, it is a correlative, statistical model, not a physical, causative model.

It is science such at this, conducted in small areas of high detail over time, that have led me to believe that the climate has been in a warming trend for at least a century.

In my estimation, the linkage to anthropogenic emissions is less compelling but remains the most likely change. If somebody comes up with a better explanation then my opinion will change.

Edgar Cayce broke it all down in the 20' and 30's.

What exactly is it you think he "broke down"?

He explained what is happening now in reasonable detail then.

Cayce is a perfect example of the two versions of faith and the resultant divergent conclusion.

I think you left off the "stupid" part.

There's sure enough an awful lot we don't know about sun cycles and impact on climate. I hope folks are working on it but I don't follow that branch of science so I just don't know.

Cool Chill out....

Low sea ice and high Arctic temperatures are not a consequence of human-caused global warming. They result from the same natural factors that have controlled weather in the Arctic and around the world since the beginning of time. Nature, not human-produced greenhouse-gas emissions, is responsible for the “melting” North Pole, as well as the deep freeze that has been occurring over the past month throughout much of Asia, Siberia, and even parts of the United States.

As Ryan Maue, a meteorologist with WeatherBell Analytics, told The Washington Post, the large Arctic storms that drew mild air into the Arctic in 2015 and 2016 are “part and parcel of Atlantic weather variability.”

In an October 2016 Nature Geoscience study, researchers running climate-model simulations against 600 years of climate records “found no evidence of Arctic sea-ice loss having impacted Eurasian surface temperature. … We conclude that the observed cooling over central Eurasia was probably due to a sea-ice-independent internally generated circulation pattern.”

This finding was seemingly confirmed in an October Geophysical Research Letters paper, which finds shifts in large-scale, regional Atlantic and Pacific Ocean circulation patterns are likely responsible for both sea-ice loss in the Arctic and more frequent cold winters in Europe recently.
Our Prediction Models Stink

To be fair, of all the climate Chicken Littles’ predictions of climatic disaster and change, the loss of sea ice in the Arctic over the past two decades is the closest to the mark. One correct prediction out of dozens hardly inspires confidence in climate alarmists’ grander, more extreme claims about humans’ role in climate change.

Climate models say temperatures should climb alongside rising carbon-dioxide levels, yet temperatures fell from the 1940s through the 1970s, even while emissions rose dramatically. For the past two decades, carbon-dioxide levels have continued to increase, but global satellites have recorded no significant temperature increase for 18 years.

Climate models predicted additional intense hurricanes, too. Yet for nearly a decade, the United States has experienced far fewer hurricanes making landfall than the historic average, and those hurricanes that have made landfall have been no more powerful than previously experienced.

Additionally, sea-level rise has slowed, polar bear numbers have increased, Antarctica is gaining ice, and crop production continues to set records year over year. Each of these points contradicts predictions made in climate models produced by the U.N. Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.

So don’t worry: The Arctic will abide, ice will return, and Santa and all the other beloved North Pole denizens will do just fine.

More claims of NOAA data tampering.

Climate Central just ran this piece, which the Washington Post picked up on. They claimed the US was “overwhelmingly hot” in 2016, and temperatures have risen 1,5°F since the 19th century.
The first problem with their analysis is that the US had very little hot weather in 2016. The percentage of hot days was below average, and ranked 80th since 1895. Only 4.4% of days were over 95°F, compared with the long term average of 4.9%. Climate Central is conflating mild temperatures with hot ones.

The Sky is Falling

Today is the Day Against Denial, where climate change activists around the country are protesting President-elect Donald Trump’s cabinet picks. Activists will supposedly converge on U.S. Senate offices and demand that their senators “reject Donald Trump’s reckless climate-denying cabinet nominees” particularly secretary of State nominee Rex Tillerson, Environmental Protection Agency administrator Scott Pruitt, and Energy secretary pick Rick Perry (if you’re not sure what a denier is, I just wrote about it here for The Hill).

Climate change alarmists are not just upset about Trump’s victory, they have completely lost their sh–. After the election, there were reports of EPA employees breaking down in tears and Energy Department staffers needing counseling.

But the topper came last Friday from meteorologist and climate researcher Eric Holthaus, who unleashed a pathetic 15-tweet rant that sadly represents the current mindset of the climate change cult. Holthaus admitted to seeing a counselor due to his post-election “climate despair” and said he knew many people who felt the same way.

This Is about Loss of Power, Not the Planet

Climate alarmists may actually be less fearful about the fate of the planet and more afraid that climate science will finally get a hard look at the federal level that is way overdue. For eight years, activist-led agencies in the Obama administration have had their way, passing harsh rules and regulations all in the name of climate change.

Agencies like the EPA and NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) have rejected and ignored congressional oversight, particularly inquiries from the House Committee on Science, Space, and Technology, led by Rep. Lamar Smith (R-Texas). Smith has accused the EPA of being driven by a political agenda rather than sound science; the agency has often refused to cooperate with Congress. That kind of stonewalling will end next week, and it’ll be interesting to see what Trump officials find at these agencies (assuming all data, emails, and research are left intact).

I thought his pick for SecState was convinced of GCC by the science. Has that changed?

Some impressive winter events have been taking place all across the northern hemisphere lately. Especially eastern and southeastern Europe have been pounded by massive snowfalls and tremendously cold temperatures. Turkey has been buried by heavy snows and extreme temperatures have gripped the entire USA and vast areas of Russia.

The global warming climate appears to have been hacked by natural factors.

Extreme cold and snow pound the northern hemisphere as some scientists warn of the potential for ice age conditions. Photo of Greenland by NASA (public domain)

In Russia Moscow celebrated the coldest orthodox Christmas in 125 years.
Snowfall paralyzed the city of Istanbul, Turkey.
Massive snow falls across the Balkans, Italy and Greece.
Dozens of Europeans have since frozen to death.
Northern Albania villages have been cut off by 120 cm of snow.
A temperature of -62°C (-80°F) was recorded in Chanty-Mansijsk (Russia).

Arctic conditions spread deep into the Mediterranean

These are all odd events when considering the “consensus” forecasts made 15 years ago, which warned that snow and ice would become rare.

In fact many scientists warned that Mediterranean conditions would spread into northern Europe. Lately, however, just the opposite has happened: Arctic conditions have plunged down into the Mediterranean!

Even worse, there is no end in site for the harsh European winter conditions, German mass circulation daily Bild writes here.

Warning of an impending ice age

So in the face of all the earlier global warming predictions, it is now only ironic that yesterday the German-language Pravda TV site here published an article warning of an impending ice age. The article cites Yale scientist Wei Liu and a recent paper he published on the “overlooked possibility of a collapsed Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation“. Should the ocean heat conveyor collapse, then there would be “a prominent cooling over the northern North Atlantic and neighboring areas, sea ice increases over the Greenland-Iceland-Norwegian seas and to the south of Greenland.”
