That was a walk down memory lane. I loved the Challenger back in the day. The GTO and the Chevelle SS 396 were pretty schweet, too.

None of 'em.
The last decent muscle cars were manufactured 1969 and before. The '70 was already throttled back. 1969 Chevelle SS396, Pontiac GTO, Olds 442, Buick Gran Sport. Dodge Charger & my personal fav. the Plymouth GTX......That was one bad ass car. |

Plymouth Road Runner Superbird. If memory servers correct, could be had for less than half the price of my 280SE.

Ok my neighborhood was heaven for these cars. Next door 396 chevelle, the other next door AMX javalin, across the street 69 340 dart, 70 442, best friend 70 trans am (fast, fast, fast) up the street 340 duster, 383 road runner, 11.5 sec 1/4 mile 351 Mustang, 396 Nova, 389 GTO its a wonder I am still here to talk about it as they were about it as they were all driven with complete abandon.
My favorites were 69 Cougars, the transam and the 340 six pack challenger equivalent to the aar cuda

I don't know about the '70 and later years being bad cars. I think my old girlfriend's '71 GTO was just as fast if not faster than my '67. The newer A body was a better car aerodynamically and handled better than the more squared off '67. My Buddy's 1970 Chevelle SS was also very strong and handled well for a big car. I think it was even faster than the 455 powered GTO. Both were rated at 335HP My '71 GS 455 was also damn fast. It pushed 510 lbft and developed a very under rated 360HP! According to some it was faster then anything powered by a Hemi. By '72 things kinda died as emission controls choked the life out of the big engines. My cousin's 1973 Javelin 401 was relatively slow in comparison.. The funny thing is that what passed for real muscle in those days is not available in a lot of family cars. Many cars now have 300+ HP and great handling.

GM/Ford intermediates were pretty porky at this point, with most crossing the 4,000 lb. curb weight mark. Not great for performance unless you go big-block. I would have to say that a Trans-Am SD-455 would be my choice, as long as I didn't have to drive it in rain/snow/ice.
I also like the 1970 AMX very much, mostly due to its styling. |

Only made in 1968. Only for racing, and currently very rare in the original, though there are also clones around. There was also a 440 Dart in 1969. I believe the story on that was that Mr. Norm's Grand Spaulding Dodge did some 440 Darts as a dealer installed option in 1968 and corporate decided to do it at the factory for a year.
I like all the ones on the poll, but of those, I most prefer the Mopar E-bodies. My second favorite from that era was the Buick GS Stage I (not on the poll) with 455 cubic inches. I actually had a Montego in high school, but it was the four-door grocery getter version.

I agree. Someone said 1969 was the last year, but actually the 70-71 cars were just as powerful for the most part. It was not until 1972 when emission controls started kicking and the cars HPs were cut down, but still many were pretty fast. Heck, as mentioned I had a 1972 Buick Electra - a huge sedan. It had the lower HP engine, but that car would still literally roast the tires. I had a 1971 Olds Toronado with a 375 hp engine... even being FWD, it would roast the front tires. I always babied mine, but I knew someone with one like it that would do it.
Now I have a 1973 Pontiac with a 455 and while its nowhere near as powerful as the 71' Olds or 72' Buick, the 455 will still move the 4600 lb sedan down the road pretty swiftly when I want it to. Quote:

According to all the You Tube car reviews I can find from the era, the Old 442 and the Plymouth GTX are the best in handling muscle cars of the time. When I saw the road test of the GTX, it was love all over again for me.
One of the worst handling (and slowest) muscle cars was the Ford Mustang. |

The Mark Donahue AMC AMX/Javelin was one car that I wanted when I was younger and the split/front bumper on the '70s Rally Sport Camaro gave that car a Jaguar look-feel to the front end...Chevy had the rear-deck area on that Camaro proportioned just right...not too boxy or elongated...it looked just right for wheelbase that the rest of the car was sitting on...and the rear spoilers that were on both those cars looked just about correct for appearances sake...word was that on the Javelin, it was practical...on the Camaro, it was just what it looked like...it was there for looks...
I had a chance to drive a MD AMX at Road America's track back in '80...I didn't get the car over 90 mph...I didn't quite have the guts to run someone else's car up a tree...my mind was WAY TOO ACTIVE for my level of driving skills back then... But, you felt the downforce on the rear when you got the car above 60...and that's what that thing needed...otherwise, the rear was too light... I drove the street version of the same car as a test-drive for a friend who was buying his first car...it didn't take too heavy of a foot to spin the skins on that baby...my friend was too afraid of the car to buy it...if I had had the cash at the time, I know I would have though...but, I didn't quite feel I was up to it and had to pass...

Spotted these at a local car show yesterday. PM me for full size pics, if anybody want them.
Also in attendance, was a Stanley Steamer, and some beautiful Fords from the teens. As well as a 50 Dodge, that reminds me of a Benz in the rear, and a 39 Imperial.

The Buick Electra 225 is a rolling sculpture! The curves on that front end are fantastic!
