Engine Swap on a 1982 500sL

Need Some help and comments needed on a proposed engine swap as follows .

My 1982 500SL needs a new engine ( excessive oil use ) and I have the opportunity to drop in a 1992 560SEC engine and 4 speed box with overdrive ( 80,000KM ) or completly reco my 500SL engine .

Both Euro vehicles.

Cost of project is not the issue here, so your comments would be appreciated .

Many Thanks

Den Downunder

i dont know

about the details but the engines should be diminsionally very similar. the 500might be an iron block, no prob not. i think you will find few differences. the engines are basically the same i believe. maybe some wiring harness issues. if you have both cars to start with i would think you will be ok.

btw, that tranny is not overdrive, is it?

they will have Totally different wiring harnesses. I beleive your 500SL is a single fuel pump as well (not sure) in which case you'll have to switch to a dual.

The easiest way to go about it would be take the 560 engine and trans, pull the intake and distributor from the 500 and transplant them onto the 560. You'll lose a bit of the performance/economy but the swap will be Much easier.

As for your Euro 500, that engine w/ a set of AMG or similarly hot sticks would wake it up nicely.

Both engines are known as m117 and the basic difference is the crankshaft. Both are light alloy blocks and are the same block. The 560 has a different fuel distributor and some differences in the rest of the system. It's as close as you can get without being identical. I think he's calling the cam shaft a hot stick. Nevermind this as finding and installing a dependable different camshaft for higher HP is more trouble than it's worth.

I have to kindly disagree on this point. Cam's are one of the Best ways to get more power from your motor. As for finding a proper girnd, that's as close as copying an AMG cam or visiting you local cam grinder.
My 89 has a very similar set up to my 91 ECE, only difference being the cams on the 89 are Much hotter. The difference in performance is very tangible, esp. when you go back and forth b/w the two.

Having grown up around speed/race shops I've been watching people put cams in everything from Sprites to big block everything..Not once did I see someone walk away dissapointed.

Lastly, if someone wants an AMG spec M117 cam I'll be reproducing my sets in the coming months. Installing them is an afternoons work.

Say you were installing these cams on a euro M117.962, what kind of results would one see? Sign me up on your wait list!
