cheyun, I switched to Proggressive and saved quite a bit of money, about $600 a year. I work for a large insurance company and even my employee discount rate is not as cheap as Proggressive. I was very suprised because I have never really shopped around for auto insurace because I assumed I was getting the best rate with the company I work for. So I guess my advice is to get quotes from many different insurers.

You can also save a bit by raising the deductible limits on your comp and collision. Insurance is licensed betting. You are betting you will need all your coverage, they are betting you won't. They charge you less if you agree with them on not needing it very often or for very much money. The downside is that if you get in a minor accident that costs less than your deductible, you have to pay for it yourself. So put any money you save from having a larger deductible into a special 'don't touch' account for use on your car after an accident.

And really check around on insurance - not just on price, but also on reliability. Some of the cut-rate insurance companies are very difficult to work with when you need them. Geico seems to come out pretty well on surveys, as does AAA. I don't know about recent surveys, but sometimes Consumer Reports does these things, as do:

http://www.epinions.com/finc-Insurance-All-Auto-Type_of_Insurance/_redir_att__~1

http://www.gomez.com/scorecards/index.asp?topcat_id=90&subSect=finance

Just remember, reviewers look for differnt things, but may bias their survey more towards one factor, such as cost, over another, such as customer satisfaction. Cheapest isn't always best. Good luck!

INSURANCE

Make sure you do your homework on the company, A lot of the smaller Insurance companies are pulling out of california because of high losses. Make sure that they are a A RATED COMPANY and beware of adds like rental car coverage, glass protection, towing, and custom and add on equipment like stereo, amps etc.rember the old myth is true YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR!!

Amica Mutual

is also a great company, they've always been rated tops in price and service. About the only way to get cheap, good insurance is to have a clean driving record, duh, a high collision deductible, no leins on the car and multiple vehicles. FYI, I'm 34 yrs old, have a perfect record and 3 cars; a 1992 500E, 1999 Chevy Pick-up, and a 1986 VW 16V Scirocco, all insured for $1500 per year and they're all covered to the max. That's not too shabby. I live in Connecticut, which ain't cheap, so if you live out in the country, look to pay even less. Give them a call at least, I'm sure they're nationwide. Best of luck.

Jim
